Anyone using Dobinsons Shocks???
I was wondering if anybody has any experiences with fitting Dobinsons shocks to their vehicles, particularly Defenders.
I am about to replace the springs and shocks on my Defender 90 and I think that I have the springs all sorted at the moment. I am going with Kings Springs front and rear which should give me around a 40mm lift.
I haven’t decided on which shocks to use yet though hence this question. I was leaning towards Bilstein shocks but I think that they may be a little too firm for the 90. I know that I can get them re-valved to the comfort setting but I really can’t justify the extra expense after paying over $700 for the shocks in the first place.
So now I’m looking at the Dobinsons shocks which retail for around $440 for all four. I have heard that these are also valved quite firmly but haven’t heard all that much about them, so any advice, opinions or experiences with these shocks would be very much appreciated.
Cheers

Have had them on the Disco for over a year now, and they are great, They suit the D1 as it has no sway bars, and the extra stiff valving helps prevent body roll. Off road they work very well, and so far no leaks.
Replaced the rears with longer Bilsteins lately, and they are a much softer valving - I tested them side by side and it is very difficult to compress the Dobs by hand, whereas the Bils were easy to push down. This resulted in more body roll and rebounding off the bump stops on the rear on big bumps.
I prefer the Dobs, but the Bilsteins were cheap and have 150mm more travel
, so we put up with the extra body roll. Left the fronts Dobs though to compensate a bit and there's no use in trying to get more artic there without heaps of mods etc.
Overall I'm impressed with them, and would get them again, any day.

I've been running Dobinson springs and shocks on my Discovery for the past two years.
They get alot of abuse and still there's no problems to report.
What I liked about the company and the product was the springs can be made to your requirements. I wanted extra heavy duty at the front and rear with 2" lift. Luckily they had something very close to what I wanted on the shelf so I ordered them.
Send an email to admin@dobinsonsprings.com with your requirements. If you know the weights of your truck both loaded and un-loaded it would help.
My Defender 130 has OME's but when they get tired I will be replacing them with Dobinsons for sure.
A very good product IMHO from a company that knows what it's talking about.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I have only been hearing positive things about Dobinsons and their prices are very good. However Dobinsons list the same shock to suit all defenders, 90’s, 110’s and 130’s.
I’m just trying to find a (Quality) shock that won’t make the rear-end skittish and harsh riding when the vehicle isn’t loaded up, which is most of the time.
Hey INter674 you said the Dobinsons shocks were valved a lot stiffer than the Bilstein’s. Did they make the ride quality overly harsh?
I guess that this is my biggest dilemma in trying to find the best shocks to fit to my 90. What seems to work great on a 110 or a Disco, may not suit the 90 quite as well. I recall a post by Larns (I think…) saying that the Bilstein’s on the rear of his 90 weren’t working out that well and were giving him a very poor ride.
Anybody else have any advice on the Dobinsons or any other shocks to suit a 90?
Cheers

I fitted a set of Dobinsons springs and shocks to the 110 on the weekend. A bit of a stressful job using jacks and axle stands. Glad that's over. The springs and shocks cost $780 which was good I thought. The shocks are much bigger than was fitted.
The ride is pretty good - no body roll. However, it now drifts to the right when decelarating. Maybe it needs a wheel alignment. I am looking forward to seeing how it goes off the bitumen.
The springs that were fitted were resized down too much. The gap btw the bump stop and front axle was only about 15mm, should be about 50mm I think. After fitting Dobinsons standard height springs (about 35mm higher than landrover) I think it would have raised the height about 85mm.
