Distributor Leads - Out of sequence ??

    My Land Rover Discovery 1996 V8i (3.9)

Can someone please...please... see the picture attached and advise if this the correct number sequence for the distributor and leads to spark plugs ??

Looking at the engine bay from the front of the car.
    - The front left (8LR) of the distributor clip goes to the Rear drivers side plug.
    - And the front right (1RF) of the distributor clip goes to the front plug on the passenger side of the engine ??.

A somewhat untidy copy of the manual.
    In other words YES
    The "s" should be a "5"

    ENGINE TUNING DATA
    Type .................................................. ...............................
    Firing order .................................................. ...................
    l-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
    Cylinder Numbers
    Left bank.. ............................................
    1-3-s-7
    .......................
    Right bank ...........................
    2-4-6-8
    .......................................
No 1 Cylinder location .......Pulley end of left bank............................................

The picture is not from the manual.. I drew it up myself.

Thanks - I'm sure I have the firing order for each side of the engine.
Just double-checking that the distributor shown in the picture is where the 8 and 1 leads go ??

    PhilipA and Grumpy..

You say 1357 is the Left Hand bank of the engine !!!?????????????????
Thats not what my picture shows - When looking at it from where ???

    - This is what is causing all the grief !!!!

In my picture it 1357 is the Right Hand Side and 2468 is the Left hand side- Is this correct ???

No. 8 is shown on the Left hand rear (nearest to drivers side firewall) and 1 is shown toward the radiator end of the engine on the coil side of the engine

To make it really simple can someone refer to the "Drivers Side" or the "Passenger side".

No, always use left & right as if you're facing forwards.

The passenger side is left, the drivers side is right (in a RHD car).

Thanks Scott, then I have the plug banks correct.

Are the leads on the "dizzy" shown to be correctly in my picture ??

ie, Pop up the bonnet and face the engine from the radiator looking towards the windscreen, is the 8 & 1 lead at the front of the distributor (radiator end) ??

That's usually correct but they could be anywhere if the distributor has been removed & refitted (sometimes happens if the engine has been rebuilt or if the oil pump drive has been removed).

If you have doubts, remove #1 plug & make sure it's on the compression stroke when at TDC. Then see if the rotor is matching the correct spot on the cap.

Thanks for posting the workshop diagrams.

These 2 diagrams in section 86 of the workshop manual appear to contradict each other !!

I have my leads connected as per the diagram on the top of the page.
    - but the bottom diagram shows the distributor with the vacuum in the opposite the position I have mine.

My vaccum faces towards the radiator/coil - not towards the engine !!!!

apologies for being the pain of the minute.
