    D2 Rear Door Lock Issue

    Hi all ,

Just got my D2 rear door lock mechanism replaced under warranty . Was told by the mechanic there that its a common fault on the D2 .
When it happened , the rear door can only be opened from the inside . Not good when your rear cargo is already full of stuff and you are trying to put more stuff in it .
Looked at the faulty lock mechanism and its a sealed unit and cannot be repaired .
Anyone else exprienced this issue and found a replacement lock or a solution to pro long its operation life span ?

    Ta

Yes mine failed - and whist I 'fiddled' with it for a few hours - I decided that I couldn't fix it. Bought another off of ebay and it's been fine since.

The old one makes a great paperweight.

I had this problem a few times and there was a thread here somewhere about it....or maybe D2AU......
The Land Rover emblem on the number plate/door handle cover can be prised out carefully with the point of a good pocket knife.... this exposes the mechanism....squirt in some RP7 or similar in there and walla!.. no more problems. Apparently the grease applied by LR has a limited lifespan.

By the way, the LR badge simply presses back in

Even though you got yours replaced under warranty, this might be worth storing away in a brain pidgeon hole.

this is only on the D1, there is no access to the lock mechanism from outside on the D2.

Keep it clean of dust, don't use 'sticky' lubes that simply collect dirt, don't have the door too tightly pulled in against the striker.

Yep, had it on our 2004 D2 back in the UK - dealt with under warranty, but no idea what they did. Sold it when we moved here, and it was still in warranty, so never needed to look for a long term solution - sorry.

The earlier ones that were always having problems were not sealed so LR has obviously redesigned the lock and the fix for the earlier ones therefore aren't applicablec. Also, on the earlier ones the door could not be opened even from the inside so its not the same problem.

Not that this helps with problem...

Had a similar issue with my DII in coober pedy...after a couple of weeks of dirt roads...

Suggested method from my LR mechanic... grab a boot or a runner or something ... and smack the black plastic handle hard a few times....

Worked like a treat..... shook the dust and crud out of the lock to allow me to open it and clean it properly.

Wish I knew about wardy's trick first thought...... for some time I thought I was locked out of my beer esky
