Thread: Bull bars...

About the strongest on a 97 Disco would be the ARB bar. Thats what I had on my 97 Disco. Very solid and well made.

There are a variety of bullbars /nudge bars popping up here, and on evilbay, the trading post etc, depending on how much you want to outlay - a new one can be pricey. You can fit it yourself - it's easy. You can always ask one of the forum members to help you ( As I ended up doing when I sold my poly bar to Rayngie) or go visit Coopers at Tempe -they seem to be the best non-dealer LR orientated mechanic in central Sydney. There's also KLR at Kingswood ( Penrith) and a guy on the Northern beaches whose name escapes me. Post a pic of the runied bullbar - somebody here might want to try and repair it.

maybe when you get your new bar you should fit it yourself, that way you will know it's fitted properly?
They aren't too hard to do as long as you have a reasonable drill.

I bought a 2nd hand ARB bar from a wrecker in QLD $600 , sanded it back and repainted it with couple of cans of black matt spray, I asked my next door neighbour to lift while I bolted it on , took less that an hour to fit , it was really easy, make sure if you get a 2nd hand one , all bolts and lights are included. cheers

Sorry, but NEVER reuse bolts on that sort of thing. For the 10$ get thick high tensile or thicker stainelss bolts. Supporting a heavy bar is an arduous job, esp after 10 years. For the best connection, use a high tensile bolt (any suitable material) and put a very large pretension on it. That way very little shear strength is applied to the bolt.

and of course thicker is better :P

IMHO, depending on your speed your still going to bend a bar,and maybe your car , it only takes one 6ft roo on the hop ( btw there was one sitting in the middle of the road just outside tenterfield , when i went through, in daylight)

I have been doing runs to the west and back for over 30 yrs now and most of it in, sedans and station wagons and 4wds, the only bar i have had is the nudge bar on the disco.plus it has a couple of roo noise makers as well, don't know if they work or not, but the roos hop away from the side of the road.
I have always had a set of good driving lights on all my cars, angled so they light up the edges of the road, more so than the distance. Plus be aware of the green pick when times are bad.

I'd have a look at the polybars, as Langy mentioned above, i just bought his off him for my Disco ( damn fine service station forecourt mechanic he is too! ), looks the goods, nice and light, and seems very strong, unless you plan on breaking rocks with a bullbar or winching, maybe have a look at them?, dunno where to get them from though....
