What sort of battery have you got? IIRC the only batteries fitted to D2s should be of the Lead Calcium sealed variety.

    Possible starter motor...

My starter motor died exactly the same way, after the head cracked. I am not sure, but my theory about it was this:
Head had hairline crack, allowing cooling system to be pressurised. On stopping, coolant was forced back into the cylinder. On starting, the coolant stoped the engine from turning, stalling and damaging the starter motor.
The answer involved $6800 lets not go there..

A good battery place will have a computerised load tester for the battery, you don't even have to disconect the battery. It will tell you instantly if there's a prob.

One interesting thing was that the dealer told me it was $1200 for a new starter, as the armature was stuffed. A country starter repair place fixed it for under $200, and its fine.... hmmm.

    Hi Baz
Try flashing high beam for a second or 2.If it starts normal its a sick battery.
Cant remember the reason, read it on a UK site eons ago,the reason it works is akin to your second start working!!!!

Took the car down to O'Donnells at Penshurst (elec) had the battery load tested, 100% OK, he then went over the car and found it was the starter motor.

He didn't seem that surprised about it, in fact he said it's normal for 4WDs of this age and the amount of offroad we do.

So it goes in to the elec on friday to have the starter motor rebuilt

    Thanks all,

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.
