    Oil colour

    Hi guys,
    I have posted this on the d2au forum but wanted to see your thoughts as well.
    I changed the oil today in my td5 and had the misfortune of not putting the
    filter on properly, possibly crossed thread not sure.
    Anyway when i started the car up oil was immediately flooding down into the
    luckily placed oil pan. About three litres ended up in the pan. I Turned car off, removed and reattached oil filter and examined the oil that had come out. This had been in the engine for like 5 mins and hadn't even warmed up. It was already jet black. The engine ran for maybe 30 sec's.
    My service routine is i change the oil myself using penrite hpr 5 and change the main filter every 5000 k's. I get the 10000 k service done by a specialist lr mechanic. At this service the main filter plus the centrifugal filter are changed

    Is it normal that the oil goes black straight away, i was kinda hoping it would stay nice and clean for a few weeks at least.
    I know that the colour doesn't effect its lubrication qualities
    directly but that would mean their is a lot of soot in the oil right??

    Should i be flushing the engine perhaps??

    Hi Aaron,

    Possibly you still had old oil not properly drained that mixed quickly with new oil.

    My oil usualy goes black quickly also. Yes plenty of soot in diesel engines.

    It would be my guess that the oil cooler would still contain quite a bit of old oil.

    Without disconnecting every single line/pipe/hose, and then using flushing oil - several times, I don't think you ever get it all out.

    Agreed... It blackens quickly, colour not critical, the properties of the fresh oil are....

    And changing your filter every 5000km's is a total waste of time and money.

    It's not a toyota, your not doing it any favours (or your wallets)

    BTW.....

    Did you drive the car prior to changing the oil? Eg. was the engine hot?

    Not only that, but isn't there about 2-3 litres that stay in all the oil gallery's pipes etc when doing an oil change. If you look at a Rave CD or manual, somewhere it will state what the oil capacity of the motor is and it will also state how much oil is needed for an oil change. The difference between the 2 is how much oil stays in the motor during a change.

    Yes the car was hot, drove it for about 1/2 hr before to pickup the oil and filter.
    Thanks for your thoughts, sounds like its not a problem. I always change the filter, its only like $10 anyway.
