May as well pitch in here, my D2 was bought for it's out of the box capabilities, comfort, load carrying ability etc etc and when I bought it 3 years ago I had done very little 4x4 driving. 3 years on, addiction has taken over and the endless search for perfection continues. For me, it has been a fast progression from when I started to the sort of driving I love to do today which has meant re-doing some early mods to cope with the riggors of what I put the car through now. Without going into too much detail, as my car is now a play only toy for me, a 2" spring lift with 285/75R16 Silverstone MT117 Sports are my tyre of choice for all round off road ability (go very well on road as well) and for price compared to other more well known brands. I have had 2 sets of 265/75R16 BFG Muds which I liked but love these tyre far more and only get slight rubbing on the plastic innner gaurd at full compression and have adjusted the steering stops accordingly so no rubbing on full lock on the flat.

Really comes down to firstly what you realistcally can afford and secondly what sort of driving you think you might like to do. I thought I would like touring with the camping gear more so set the car up for this initially, but once I tried some more technical rocky stuff I was hooked and now do virtually zero touring....other than getting to play areas for the weekend etc. If you are changing the car and its tyres etc, then simply bear this in mind on road and as they are not sports cars from factory, they should be driven accordingly. Gearing has been mentioned and yes as mine is a manual I had to change mine which works out pretty expensive, but worth it to maintain drivability.

My current quest is for more down travel hence why I am staying with a 40mm lift and changing shocks and a few other parts to gain more down travel, once this is done my already very cabable machine will hopefully be more capable

Bottom line, these toys are not investments and are simply to keep us amuzed, so fit what you think is appropriate for now and also for the short term and if this turns out to be wrong, them replace and sell the tyres which lessens the damage to the hip pocket at change over.
