My Tdi was the same all i did was get the muffler cut out and a hotdog muffler welded in , in your case if you want it gone just get a bit of pipe welded in place of the muffler
OK, I am thinking about removing the centre mufler on my Defender TD5. The exhaust on these things is a silly set up with the muffler piece with flanges either end. What did you guys do? As there is a bend not far behind the rear of the muffler did you just cut the pipe and remove the muffle and put in a piece of 60mm exhaust with flared ends or replace the whole section including flanges? Is the effect noticeable?
Thanks

I got the whole muffler assembly and pipe and flanges replaced as a single piece (with a slight bend in the middle) so that I could put the original muffler back if I didn't like it. It took the muffler place about 45 minutes to fabricate it. Cost $80.
I reckon it was worth doing for the lower down grunt, but don't expect a firebreathing V8 sounding vehicle - it is hardly any different noise wise and from inside you can't even pick that it is straight through. Outside it whistles more from behind (the turbo).
Sorry - I meant I replaced the whole middle muffler section with the straight through pipe.
I still have the final "pod" muffler at the end of the exhaust (after the rear axle). I think this little muffler at the end is straight through, so effectively I have no mufflers at all.
Mine is a 130 TD5 BTW.
I had a 2.5" straight through system (Still with two mufflers though) put on my TDi, and I can't really hear the difference in exhaust note, which is what I wanted.

I just had it removed and replaced by the local muffler shop. $60 I think.
You definitely notice more pull low down. The noise is noticeable inside up to about 1500. After that you can't tell.
I had the resonator at the rear and the muffler removed and a pipe welded in place of each......huge difference in noise (much noisier) and slightly better pick up from idle.
Whole thing cost me about $50 to do and has made a slight difference to spool up.......lovely whistle from the turbo now which sounds awesome![]()
So are you guys saying there is a benefit from removing the centre muffler?? Why, how, what??
Jimmy
It allows more free flow of the exhaust gases from the engine and therefore the turbo can spool up easier ( apparently ).
On advice from here I recently got the standard centre muffler replaced with a free flow "sports" muffler and yes it is definitely worth the $140 or so to do it - somewhat better on take off and low down pull.
I didn't go the straight thru pipe method, on advice of the muffler shop that a bit of back pressure is still needed even on Turbo Diesels ( or maybe they just wanted to upsell me)
