JustinC is the man to talk to,he has done a Rangie!!!!

Hello all.
Before I ring these blokes, does anyone know if there's a difference between these engines and the factory Isuzu's. I think one would look good in place of my flogged out V8. Also, anyone know if emission standards would be a factor in such a conversion. It's a 12/91 Disco. I've been researching the viability of the swap and everything infront of and behind the donk...just need the (initial) budget approval from the 'Minister for War'. Any advice would be welcome.

Alternatively, talk to KLR Auto in Penrith (02) 4721-3675. They have done several - both Brad and Matt drive 4BD1-T powered Rangies. They've also converted Defenders and Ford F250s

Muddy rodent,
I would definately change the gearing, these engines runout to only 3200rpm. I would use 32 or 33 inch tyres, and if using the 5 spd R380 conversion then leave all else alone.
I would give the vehicle at least an inch body lift to clear rocker cover.
I recommend intercooling, but fitting it in could be a chore. I fitted my front mount and then cut the car up a bit around it to plumb it! Isuzurover has a water to air IC and it looks the goods. Works well too apparently.
If using the factory 4BD1t You may well have a bonnet clearance issue with the crossover pipe, with a 2.5" body lift it shouldn't be a problem.
Definately change the filters for the single one, these will hit the front tailshaft otherwise.
The differences between the 4BD1T and the NA engines are negligible for light duty work. The factory turbo engine uses oil jets under the pistons etc but these engines are designed for a high duty cycle in a truck, even then they last 1,000,000k's. I have a turbo intercooled NA engine with huge mileage. It is fine and uses little fuel and some small amount of oil. It has very little crankcase pressure and has no glow circuit connected at all. Even in sub zero temps starts well.
These are a fantastic engine for a landy, turboed they fly on the highway with the gearing right, and offroad they have massive torque off idle and will have to be accelerated down hill in 1st low!
I'm getting about 27mpg highway, and 24 to 26 mpg a mix of crawling in low and highway. Very happy thanks.

Gday
If these are the chinese remanufactured engines stay right away from them. They are having problems with getting all the ancilleries from japanese engines to bolt on. I could,nt see the link as my dial up has dropped its guts again.
I have done the conversion in a Rangie as JustinC has and it is a lot of work to do it properly. But its a hoot to drive on and off road. Low range with 4:1 diffs and rock crawler trans is superb. Although your Landy will sound like a fruit truck.
Depending on your needs a 300TDI conversion may be more in the Minister's budget???

It now runs a smaller TD5 turbo (switzer turbo in this photo) but it is a snug fit in a RRC engine bay.

Thanks JC & P38.
Yep, my wish list includes most of the mods you mentioned. I was thinking of a top mount intercooler with a small? scoop. I thought of making moveable doors at either end of the scoop to be operated via linkage to allow air to be rammed on the highway and sucked out on the dirt.. with maybe a small thermo fan to force the wind through it - this would necessitate a body lift anyway, plus the 255/85s. The scoopy thing might create more dramas than the benefits - should probably get the engine first!
Hmm, yeah, i think they need looking into - $6600 for a new diesel seems awfully cheap too. I've been keen on these oilers for ages and at the time of buying the Disco i couldn't afford a Tdi - the 'other' option is a HSE 2.8 but at $14k it's not looking good. The general plan is engine/box/diff/rad etc transplant and i've got the tools and experience in doing that sort of conversion, so it's a bit more research for now. And yes, 300Tdi is a close runner for the budget/Minister.
Just out of interest,
What sort of costs are there to install the 4bd1t after buying the engine ?
and then comparing that to buying and installing either a V8 4.xlt on LPG or a even a 300TDI ?
Matt.
