Those valve caps need regular replacement.
Part Number : LJC100270
Adjusted the valve clearance and it has helped quieten down a 300tdi but I noticed whilst checking them the little cap looking parts (very technical description I know!) on some seem to be dented or crushed. She has 230K so think this could be reasonable although the engine was supposed to have been rebuilt (by a landrover dealer) less than 40K ago.
Can you replace these little cpas or is it replace the whole valve?
Thanks in advance

Not a huge drama to replace them as bigjon said you should replace them occasionally, they can get damaged if the clearences are to tight mainly I have found, I set mine to 10 thou all round cold which seems to work fine.
I have only replaced one of them, and a mate gave me one to chuck in which was S/H but in good nick, I have been meaning to replace all of them with new ones but I havnt had any trouble with the clearences going out so I havnt bothered.
when they get damaged they can cause problems with the rotation of the valve stem...
nothing usually too critical but its a knock on effect.

Is there a trick to changing them or just pop the old ones off and push on the new ones?
Yes, that is all. Just try not to drop any into the bowels of the engine.
A Small magnet is a handy tool to have when doing this.
Does anyone have a tip for making sure the valve is in the correct position. I am doing it by eye but notice you can turn the engine a reasonable amount once the valve seems to be in the fully open position (not the one being adjusted of course!) before it seems to start closing again.
Or does the amount represent the valve being "open" during the cycle and so is ready for the other valve to be adjusted. (Hope this makes sense! Asking if the extra movement makes any diffrence to the alve clearance on the one being adjusted)
If you do a search you will find a hany PDF with the order for adjusting
I think inc posted it
Found it.....I think, I'm on the PDA so I cannot open the files
