    Weekend Work

After the wife came home the other afternoon complaining the Defender felt like it had a flat tyre, but didn't. My first thought was lack of power, turbo hose but dismissed that as she was still able to get up hills in the same gear but a bit slower.

So a change of fuel filter (was due anyway) seems to have rectified that, anyway sent her out for a test run (I was duty officer so tied to phones/radios for the RFS) only to hear the metallic sound of a stuffed uni joint, couldn't get one in the limited time I had on Friday so picked one up Saturday morning and changed the rear on the front shaft.

    All good.

Sunday morning onto what I had scheduled for the weekend, swap over the clutch master cylinder with a stainless resleeved one (thanks to Scouse for the u/s one I got to resleeve).

Job turned out fairly easy if a bit fiddly getting the pedal box out. I reckoned the clutch was a bit lighter after the job wife says its heavier but smoother , who knows.

The old cylinder had no sign of corrosion but a bit of wear from the piston travelling kicked over (if you understand) took a lot of air pressure to get it out past the small lip.

All up about $100 for the resleeved clinder, kit and 500ml of brake fluid.

All in all a productive weekend albeit not the best one to do it on.

Now to stock up on a few parts for the future.

In more ways than one I wish somebody else was doing it. Still the satisfaction of knowing you did it - and covered all bases, is worth it. Just seems to happen at inconvenient times.

A hoist would make it sooo much easier than cold concrete on the back.

Yeah and if you DIY you know it's done properly. Every time I use a mechanic I have a very good look and usually find something to fix!

Hi bushie, if its not air in the line i might be doing something similar to my clutch soon. So its easy you reckon? Did you just get an old master cylinder resleeved? I didnt wuite get what you said. How much cheaper than buying a new one is that?

you can get new ones for a little as $50 from trailer manufacturers or shopping around 'well that what i have read on hear', i think i paid around $65 with instruction on setting up the correct pedal height

theextra $$$ for a stainless one shoul outlast a standard one easy

if the disco is the same as a defender, pull the six sxcrews of the inspection plate and pull the rubber boot back to see if its full of brake fluid

    Matt,

Scouse was good enough to source an old mastercylinder for me so I was able to get that resleeved and just do a swap. The resleeve was $85 and the guy told me I could have got a new one for $49. Maybe it wouldn't have mattered that much as there was almost no corrosion in the old cylinder but a just bit of wear The stainless one however should be good for the life of the vehicle (just keep clean fluid up to it).

The job didn't take that long and with the pressure bleeder very easy to bleed.

(Tip: take the pedal rubber off before you try to take it out)

Hi Bushie, thanks mate, i am hoping all i need to do is bleed mine, the resevoir was empty , one thing i havent checked, i am used to cable operated clutches and didnt even think to check it, so in two years it has weeped out that much, and that assuming it was full when i bought it. Matt

New transmission oils, both diffs, transfer case, gearbox was done last month. new air filter

Tomorrow will probably be coolant change and brake fluid change.

Realised its time to buy a decent drum pump (or something similar)

Then one of Incs new stickers will go on the windscreen

Coolant will have to wait till next weekend,

I would like to meet the sadistic little ***** that put the clamp back on the bottom hose last, no way could I get a screw driver onto it and didn't have (I think) a 1/4" AF spanner, 6mm too small, 7mm too big and no way to get my smallest shifter in either.

    Everything else done though.
