    Auto Gearbox Strangeness...

    Hi Guys...

I thougth i was going mad ... but evidently im not.. or im already there

I have noticed since having the DiscoII td5 Chipped that the auto box is doing a strange thing..

say im doing about 90kph... i put my boot down to accelerate and as the torque convertor is locked the revs increase with the speed... (unless it kicks down of course..) anyway i have noticed that *sometimes* it allows the torque convertor lock to slip so the revs increase faster than the speed does.. the big thing here is that it is completely inconsistant..

trip to the zoo today.. it was doing it all the way down there... put my foot lightly to increase stays locked.. boot it a bit more and it slips (not as much as if the lock wasnt on tho) on the way back... wouldnt do it... just accelerated as per normal..

the closest thing i have seen to this behaviour is the cruise control would slip the lock if it didnt think it had the revs to maintain speed up a hill... but why is it doing it without cruise on... and so inconsistently...

other than that its driving fine! any ideas suggestions or is this normal behaviour due to the increased torque? (again why so inconsistent)

    Thanks

    Steve

    Steve,
your problem sounds a little bit like what I had, albeit, mine is a tdi.

It would sit on about 2,500 revs at 100kmph, give it a kick to move on a bit or to overtake, I would only notice this with the tacho, the revs would jump 2 or 300, over what it was sitting on, but the car would not increase in speed, had me wondering, torgque converter, don't have cruise control.

Anyway now it sits on 2250 at the same speed, what fixed it, wouldn't have a clue, but after I had the timing belt replaced, in december, everything was fine, I did find out though the timing on mine was out by a tooth or maybe two not exactly sure. ( dealers did the previous, recall, change)
Since you mentioned you had it chipped maybe the chip isn't timing correctly, just a thought, i think the auto boxes are the same.
Perahps a more learned 'chip' experts will give their view.
    But the similarity is uncanny.

    Thanks John...

car runs fine... and does increase in speed when it has this problem.. to be honest it pulls like a train, im stunned at the difference.. so im not thinking engine problems.... im just thinking an occasionally lazy torque convertor lock.. or over torque protection... but the inconsistency is whats confusing me (easily done) seems strange tho... it worries me as i dont want it slipping hitting a big hill towing.. if it doesnt need to!

    Thanks

Yes mate, mine now does the same, almost to the speed of the batmobile, in pickup, but there is no lag when i give it a bit of boot, a lot of boot makes it kick down, like it is supposed to,
thats what made me wonder what was wrong with it pre new timing belt.

been doing it again today.. watched it a bit more carefully.. but i still honestly dont know what causes it to start...

down the freeway on way back from work... 90kph... give it a toefull and instand pickup... no lag.. however after a very short period of time (maybe half a second) the torque convertor starts slipping but only by about 2-300 rpm above its locked speed. car increases speed in normal rapid way.. ease of the accelerator and it comes back down to 'normal' locked rpm none of the usual pull felt that i associate with the torque convertor locking at 80k's all nice and smooth....

its definitly not a lack of power as the car increases in speed and pulls like a train its not kickdown as the slippage is controlled.. so please is this normal? as far as landies can be 'normal'

    Thanks again

thats a very good question.. i have only had the dII since december.. and its due its 100k service very shortly.. but it does have full dealer service history (not that this means much)

could that be a symptom? this is my first time with an auto... and its only been noticed with the extra power..

    thanks
