Very much agree .. they are hard work especially on extreme angles. They make sense to me because of the cost and flexibility they offer. The question also needs to be asked .. how many of us have seen elec winches fail during a recovery or they wear out the battery halfway through ... ? I've seen a few in my time .. yet to see a handwinch fail.

I can see real value in an electric winch for $600 and still have my hand winch as back up.......as mentioned before, it will not be used weekly, monthly or even 6 monthly perhaps, but when it is called upon, I can very easily see the $600 being justified straight away
Agree .. if you have all the ancillaries in place they start to make sense at $600.

Calm down thrasher ... the comment was a joke as per the smily face at the end of it!! I'm sure you use "all your equipment on the farm" but this is not the Farmers Weekly forum. We are discussing 4WD equipment used for that purpose and the pros and cons of a cheap electric winch. I proposed the handwinch as an alternative to a cheap elec. winch for "somebody that rarely need one or doesn't do extreme 4wding" .. like the people you were talking about in your previous post .. hence the reason why I quoted your post .. and started my post with "if it only gets used on the rare occasion" Read before you blast brew!

why don't you read neck injury[broken neck ] so obvisiosly i can not use a hand winch anymore and yes this is not farmers weekly well don't know what type of farm you worked on in south africa but where iam my vechicle prity much stays in low range constantly,my hand winch use to be used almost everyday my 265/75/16 Mickey Thompsons MTZ get used alot i dont know how you use your 4x4 but to me all of this is talking 4x4 equipment

So I was thinking of filling those holes with a cheap winch that may get used one day.

Lately I have bought a few things on e-bay made in China including a set of HID lights for my KTM. They were very cheap and i was surprised to find that they were also very good quality.

I would like to hear a report from someone who has bought one of these cheap winches. I see Repco are now selling the same ones that are on ebay and are charging around $600 more.

I have one on my Disco, for about 2 years now, I have only used mine twice, both times just to put some tension on the rope, winched up an incline with no problems, dismantled it when I purchased it and cleaned out the crap that the Chinese call Grease, the gears and plates aren't real flash but look sevicable, the collar that holds the In/Out clutch lever is only pressed in and it fell out on mine, I welded it back in. I used good quality marine grade grease and packed it in tight, I am not confident that the gears would last forever, but it should get you out of trouble, esp. if you use 2 snatch blocks to halve the load on the winch.
The Aldi winches look to be the same as mine, except I have 28M of 11mm cable, same hp and gear ratio, the warranty is for 3 years and Aldi's idea of a warranty is give them the broken winch and they will give you another one, no help if it busts in the bush, but then neither is a broken Warn or Thomas and I've heard some horror stories about them as well, It's up to the individual, but if like anything else if you dont flog it and maintain it properly it should do the job, Regards Frank.

I would be careful with the wire rope that comes with these winches. A 9mm wire rope is not really strong enough for a 9000lb winch, let alone a 12,000lb one.

I have a Mile Marker on my truck, came in a plain box with the stickers in the box and not on the winch so thats where they stayed.

It is the same winch that Brawn sell in 8000lb and runs 11mm cable (I think I have never measured it but looks thicker than 9mm) and pulls like the proverbial school boy although has been noisey from day 1 and sucks tonnes of power.

In saying that, I bought it on ebay for $600 as we do a fair bit of touring on our own but nothing narley on our own but I thought it is better than nothing if I did get stuck all though I still have a shovel and jack.

I also have a bad back and would stuggle with a tirfor as I know from pulling tree's over it is more hard work than I want to do when Im on holidays and I dant want to be in pain for a couple of weeks after doing a short winch if I had to.

I have used it probably 6 times in 3 years and the only thing to give trouble has been the solenoids that sometimes dont want to work but after a quick wack they come good but I will get round to replacing them eventually.

I had a Warn 8000lb on a tow truck I used to drive just to drag dead machines on the back and it was taken off and repaired 3 times before we pulled it appart and fixed it properly, the cage on the planetry set wasnt secured properly and just spot welded in place and we were only pulling rolling stock up a 10' ramp.

I havnt pulled mine apart to see how it is put together but it has pulled a couple of Pootrols out from being bogged to the floor pan 1 where I had to drop the landy into a trench and winch my self out later as it was dragging me in but I think the bar will break away before the winch will break so Im happy with mine.

An auto elec mate of mine had a look before I fitted it and went and bought on him self as he said the motor was good quality so I think it is ok.
