    Drive train problem

    Here's one I can't work out...
When letting the clutch out from a full stop I can feel the standard 110 slack take up. Here is the strange bit. Occasionally, the drive feels like it falters for a split second and then I feel and hear a clunk/ click sound, and then drive is restored. Checked the A frame ball joint, but it 's good.
I thought I found the problem when got under and checked the prop shafts. I found the rear prop shaft front nuts were loose(the ones that bolt the shaft to the hand brake drum). Ahhh, it made sense. I replace the uni-joints and nuts (that tightened up the slack ) but the problem still occures, although less often... I experience this maybe once a week so I can't show a mechanic.

    More info...
Engine -4BD1 ISUZU (replaced the clutch 9 months ago) Get a strange faltering feeling at 70kph (feels like a petrol eng thats got a bad spark plug), but I think thats unrelated and needs the injectors and pump looked at. Another problem that needs money thrown at it.

G/box -LT95 (reco 5 years ago, maybe done 80k. Has been great up until 5months ago. Noticed that oil has started ****ing out the front (Leaks out the bell housing wade plug hole) dispite changing the seal when it was out for the clutch change. Also started being difficult to change down to 2nd and 1st. )

Diff -Sal with MDE diff lock. Never had any problems.

    Can anyone offer any ideas?

Sounds as if ya center diff is haven probs or ya have a tooth off one of ya crown wheels in ya diffs ...

As for the oil coming out ya wade plug it may have a prob with the oil pump which is on the front of the box inside the bell housing or the front main seal

I don't have anything for you on the drivetrain Q's, but I had the same oil leaking out the bellhousing hole, having just pulled the engine out I found that and the oil pump on the front of the gearbox was leaking like a seive. Just need to replace the gaskets and tighten up the bolts with a bit of locktite (a couple of them were quite loose). Not usual that the rear main seal on the isuzu leaks but you could check this by the colour of the oil coming out the hole black = engine clear=gearbox.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys...

New clutch= new everything, machined fly wheel, bearing and bush, new modified rear seal on the engine and new front seal on the gear box. I'm in Perth Dave.

I assumed the oil leak was from the GB front shaft seal but it could be the gaskets on the pump (they break very easily, I went through 2 before I got it right).

The clunk doesn't feel savage enough for a tooth to be missing in the diff...but then again, I've never felt what that feels like so I'll look in to it.

Centre diff...never thought of that, has anyone had a problem like this with their centre diff?

Only problem I have had with the centre diff is worn thrust washers giving a lot of extra slop. I wonder if you have a coupling somewhere in the drive train that has a lot of slop on a spline but is tightened up enough on the nut that it only shows up as slop if you have been reversing or using engien braking? Could be any of the flanges - diffs, T/C even hub drive flanges, although these are less likely as they don't have a nut to tighten them up. A less possibility would be the output gear on the main gearbox loose on its shaft, although I can't see that being intermittent like that, and its not supposed to be a problem on that gearbox.
