Found my vibration problem at long last!

Short answer: Two issues, each masking the other. Was both diff & tyres. Took a change to a third set of tyres to resolve.

Long answer: Been worried for some month about vibration at highway speeds. Got nervous about posts re d/c shaft failures, changed that. Didn't resolve. Can't recall why the rear shaft came off, but it was u/s, so it was changed. no difference.

Vibration getting worse by this stage. Figured tyres needed to be eliminated, & the 35" tyres might be have some big gyroscopicc forces. Put 32s on, no real difference.

Now obviously a noisy diff, & vibration kicking in at 70 kph. After some cw&p dramas, changed that. Noise goes, but vibration kicks in @ 90 kph. Bugger. More consistent though.

The 32s were 235/85s that haven't been used since last yr's desert run. I only threw them on coz of this yr's trip in a few weeks. Obviously one or two have thrown a weight.

With the boost alloys & road Pirellis, all is normal again. Thank @#$#% for that.

So, two sets to be balanced again on Saturday!

    Regards
    Max P

    Jeez what a marathon.
Just a note on the tyres, they have dense sections all thru the rubber so as they wear the heavy spots shift around a bit, always needing periodical rebalancing, so no tyre will stay in balance from new fitment to dead.
Notice Coopers are particular about this in their guarantee.

Too true, had a guy come in to the tyre joint after getting new rubber fitted and then drove CSR and then some rocky/muddy tracks in the Highcountry before coming back to Melb.

After washing his truck he noticed that he had major imbalance in the tyres, brought it in saying he had never had a problem before and we had done something wrong, trying to get it done for free and we had to move the weights around a bit but they werent that bad out just but the extra weight of the dust and mud collected had worn the tyres so that when he washed it off they were un balanced.

They were Hankooks and did very well towing a van across the CSR on an F100.
