So, the crap that blocked Q's inline filter may have been 'tars' & stuff as it would have passed through the sock?
It just seems a bit odd that with all that he found in the line filter, there wasn't anything in the sock is all, with 300,000 on the clock. Maybe the PO also cleaned the tank & replaced the pump but didn't replace the inline filter??????? Who can now say anyway?:(

from memory the sock (mine was green?)wasnt the greatest filter ever seen,, I imagine anything fluid would ooze through.

The pump from the wrecker was installed in the carrier this morning (Sunday) and after a little bit of wire bending, all went into the tank.

On the tick of noon, I went for a start up.

Success!!!

Ran it up for about five minutes and all seems well. Now I just have to put everything back where it should be...

I'd to thank you all for your help, advice, assistance and musings, couldn't have done it without you.

While the old pump was pumping freely, under load it was obviously not up to the job. Now I have a newer pump and a new filter.

This also leads me to another little issue, I reckon the fuel we get here is not the best, so once the Disco is beack in order, I think I'll give the missus' Falcon the once over...

On the fuel thing. In the Winter I use a cupful of Meths every few tanks full to help shift any water (condensation) in there from Tanker & pump hoses as well as a dose of Morey's Upper Cylinder Lubricant.

The Meths turns the water into a 'brine' & makes it easier for the pump to shift & 'burn'.

wynes carby cleaner or injector cleaner will do the same thing but metho is cheaper.

And, the pump cost me all of $50 from the wreckers and came with the carrier from the dead Commodore. The new filter was $33, so job done for $83!

However, as I have a pump of unknown origin (as in age), for that price, I might just acquire another when I next pass the wreckers.

This one was from a VR C'dore and that's about all I know about, very quiet as it has a rubbery cover/insulator, it's also half the weight of the one it replaced.

Equivalent newies quoted from various aftermarket joints, were from $175 - $220......
one supplier said the Land Rover pump is exactly the same as the Falcon pump...according to his parts charts.

I mention that just for reference when this becomes a job for another Landy owner, the change of pump in the carrier was very easy, but the VR version is a little shorter, has a different pos/neg wire coupling to the LR spade type connectors and the 'spout' on the pump, where it marries to the hose on the carrier is maybe a ml or 2 narrower, just had to tighten the hose clamp a little more...

One other thing: for a while, my Disco has taken several cranks to fire the motor; now it fires almost immediately, as I've done a number of start ups today... maybe this was a telltale of an impending problem....

Great to hear you have it sorted.............and whilst it was a bit of time involved the $ output was kept to a minimum, which I like.

The ford ones are not the same and should not be used IMHO...

ok not all ford ones are Some are ok Some are not there are a couple of models that exceed the required delivery pressure while that may be a good thing if you want a cheap power boost it may tax the regulator and injectors.

It may also throw the brain into a spaz and cause hard to diagnose problems later when some other sensor gets a little out of whack.

The commodore ones are also not correct but only becuase the bottom of the range ones are a little low on delivery flow rate but to my knowlodge they dont have one that exceeds the max requirements of the rover.

Yeah Dave, I think I might agree there, I have a good ear for things that spin, and the replacement has a different tone... but that could be many reasons.... curiously this one sounds like a very distant mild subwoofer, I now have a deep bass sound I didn't have before....

I suppose I should do a pressure check and see what the 'new' pump delivers, psi wise.....

...but, it's all working, which is a damn side better than yesterday!
