    In Car Entertainment

With a road trip to Adelaide looming in july, i have been thinking about in car dvd players to keep out 4 yo entertained over the 9 hour journey. Anyone here have either the roof mounted or tablet type players that hang off the back of the seat or other options ?

I found the laptop is better, i just copied a bunch of movies to the hard drive and made up a cable to plug into the cig lighter... my IBM is 16v so it charges fine at 13.8v but will stop when the car is only idling.

Not wanting to be too judgemental but there is a lot to see out of the window for a 4 year old to enjoy. Might learn something as well.

How many million points did that set you back ? I could use my laptop and make some kind of mount to hold it on the centre console, already have the power adapter but something portable will be good for other uses as well.

    you got a spoilt kid

45 years ago when l was 4 it was at its most sophisicated level of play to engage in game of l spy with something beginning with .........

or a chorus of old macdonald had a farm .........

or watch dad speed the car to bowl over the pheasant wandering on the road and then slam on the brakes and rush out the back with the potato sack he always carried for such a bounty

if the scenery was boring there was always falling alseep in the back

Best thing we ever did for long trips with the kids. Twin screen setup from DSE. Do not buy the roof mounted setups, especially for kids become very difficult to look at. Buy one that the screen can be attached to the front seat headrest or a replacement headrest with an lcd in it. Normally you can pick the twin screen set up for under $400 now. The one we got came with a games controller with a few basic games and abillity to hook up a play station or similar.

We used to talk with our kids on trips. They had their favourite books and toys and we would throw in a couple of surprises. Shame to think that we need to entertain with electronic toys that they soon tire of. How many DVD's would you need to take on a 9 hour trip? And what about on the way back. What about if we want to do a trip around Australia?

Then the thing goes kaput and the kids are bored with nothing to do.

Well I guess that's progress in one direction or the other for society.

It's not the destiation that's important but the journey. (I have no idea who said this .)

I won't knock the odd video, but have never seen the need myself. Stop more often than you'd like to if alone to get out and play - a local park with swings/playgym and toilets is a good stopover point , have a collection of toys (esp new or not-seen-for-a-while toys), favorite tapes/cd's (and you might use the DVD player and headphones for the cd's as well).

I agree about not watching endless movies but just for that last 30-60 mins when the novelty wears of being in the car wears thin and the screaming begins, will also have a 4 month old in the car as well .
