    Help a mate

sorry if this has already been covered, but i have a question on behalf of a friend and really dont have time to search the archives

my mate is doing the timing belt on his 200tdi defender, well trying to anywayz

he has ground to a halt getting the crankshaft pulley bolt off.... snapped 2 breaker bars already (would have done more but has run out of spares )

    couple of quick q's

fristly should it be that tight?
is he turning the breaker bar the right way, clockwise, he has a workshop manual and is going by that so id assume it is correct. cant hurt to ask tho
and are there any tricks that'll make it easier for him?

already used a fair bit of WD40, anything better??

    cheers,
    Simon

ANTICLOCKWISE When viewed from the front of the engine. It now may be quite tight.....

I have never done a 200tdi so obviously I'll defer to the experts, but my reading of the workshop manual does suggest that the cs pulley bolt may undo in a clockwise FTF direction... (refer p42 200tdi workshop manual supplement)

(for sure the 300tdi does undo anticlockwise FTF and I do know how much force is required)

Use nothing but a 3/4" bar and maybe a touch of heat on the pulley bolt to soften any locktite previously applied

in any case.... a timing pin and a pulley holder & puller will have to be fabricated/borrowed

    see http://www.difflock.com/downloads/DI...i-Rotation.pdf

    also FWIW see http://www.difflock.com/servicing/30...mingbelt.shtml

I haven't seen the workshop manual you are referring to, but it most definately is NOT a left hand thread.

Pretty sure you put on the socket and breaker bar, jam it against the chassis and hit the starter for a second or so.

Or is that to tighten it?

OK Justin, as I said I'll defer to the experts and I stand corrected - but I can understand how a person following the manual could think that it was clockwise - if I could I'd scan & post a copy of the relevent page I have in front of me.

Sounds like a bit of a worry LJ, Especially something this important to make a fundamental error in the manual!!
I wonder if they are talking about the fan clutch attaching nut? THAT has a left hand thread.

    Just a thought.
