Hi Guys,
my Disco (TD5 Auto) has developed some strange behaviour.
When I apply the accelerator to approx 50% everything is fine, however, if I really step on it the engine behaves as if someone would jump on & off the accelerator at 1 sec intervals. Same if cruise control is enabled.
I checked the wire harness and there is very little oil in at the ECU, which is odd because before the wires go into the connector that goes into the ECU the cables split up (no harness), so I am not sure how the oil travels there. Inside the wires?
One more thing, although it may not be related: the car started doing this yesterday, while driven in the wet.
Any idea what could cause this?
Thanks
Georgie
Sydney, you think that causes the problem?![]()
on the off chance, work out the throttle position required to cause the fault then chuck it in low range and see if the throttle position changes.
If it does it at the same RPMs but different throttle position oil in the harness is the main culprit
If it does it at different RPM but the throttle position remains the same then its the TPS.

I'm pretty sure overboosting does this also.

Hi Georgie,
Check the throttle pot. If there are problems with it, it throws an error code which your local LR service person can diagnose.
Mine did similar, & this was the problem. Has been perfect since.
I had something similar happen to mine a few years ago, check the hose that controls the turbo waste gate as slunnie said over boost will cause this sympton there is two hoses on this circuit one from the that goes to the control valve and the other one that goes to the waste gate soleniod.
There is also another sensor on the inlet manifold chech that the plug is not loose.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, will try to get a better understanding tomorrow.
I forgot to say: when I leave the accelerator floored the engine will rev up, but in a kind of staggered way. May provide a further clue.
Georgie
if its "staggering" or "stepping up the revs" then its probabley boost related...
what happens is...
fuel is applied engine revs rise and boost rises, boost exceeds allowable limits so the engine cuts fuel, engine revs sabilise and boost drops off. More fuel is applies so RPMs rise and boost rises, boost exceeds allowable limits, revs stabalise and boost drops so more fuel is allowed.. yada yada yada till you hit the rev limiter.
check the lines (as previously mentioned) to the waste gate valve actuator on the turbo, the manifold pressure sensor, and just for giggles the EGR setup.
A pressure gauge plumbed into the pressure line on the waste gate actuator will let you know whats happening.
