    Winch mountign question...

On my Defender, I have a bar which has the winch holes at the front and on top, but the bumper part is just front and top section (i.e. big lump of right-angled metal) so looking at the wionch today, I'm assuming it bolts to the front of the bumper, but this means all the weight of the thing (and I never knew they were that heavy until I carried it out the shop to line it up on the car!) is on the 4 mounting bolts...can't see any other way it would go, so is this normal??

Also means the clutch handle, rather than popping through the nice rectangular hole on top of the bar would actually be at the back, as I'd effectively have to turn the winch on it's side to mount it's bolt holders to the front of my bar. Again, is this normal?

(Now wishing I'd paid more attention when admiring other people's winches on Defenders!!)

Oh, and when wiring these, what do you use as a "fuse" or do winches usually have a link/breaker somewhere in their control boxes?

Finally, as the winch will go where the number plate is, can I safely move this to the side and cover one of the indicators in the bull bar, or are these alegal requirement even though the bar doesn't hide the ones in the lamp cluster at the front?

Many thanks...once I'm happy I'm not being daft, I'll go and grab the thing at fit it one afternoon next week. Will probably need longer leads too, to reach a Defender battery!!

Yep that's how it bolts on. think about which way the winch will be pulling at 9500lbs . you don't want side loads on bolts. A nice flat plate of steel works best, such as a bullbar.

The clutch body rotates, but you may have to undo something.

There should be brackets to mount the number plate else where, should have come with bullbar. Don't cover blinkers, there for other peoples safety

Seriously think about getting a pro to fit it, ie: someone from ARB. winches can kill.

I'll back Zute if you have the slightest doubt get the pros to do it.

The main power cables are pretty much hot all the time If your worried about that Fit a master switch or isolation switch on the battery that is the primary winch battery.

with the number plate issue ITs ok to mount it over the indicator in the bar provided you remove the marker and indicators from both sides.

Personally Id invest in a fold down mount for the plate and keep it in the center.

No problem with getting someone in, but there is no guarantee of quality just because you use a big name, I've usually found.

Plus, I'm fussy as hell with wiring, and will want it perfect, and most shops working on fixed cost will do it the cheapest/quickest way...I've redone many cars properly after allegedly being wired by a "pro" where the cheap and nasty scotchlocks or other components have failed at some later point. :-(

Someone who would show me how to do the mounting bit of winch install with me then following up with the wiring would be perfect, I'd guess. Trouble is, who's going to want to do one bit of a small job...not worth their while.

well If your near brissy and you want to do it like that and have the winch kit complete Ill throw it in for you on the mechanical side of business and you can deal out your own wiring later.

    Hahaha. he's "sorta" near Brisbane

    Perth!

BTW - If you have to ask about how to install the winch, you need someone to do the job for you....

True, but if I just hand it off to a shop, I won't know how on the next car either....so, at some point, I either have to do one, or watch one being done.

The wiring side isn't a problem technically, but it's still good to know how people do them with regards protection, as we're a little outside fuse and normal circuit breaker territory here...but I assume there is something done to prevent a short condition going straight across the battery. Didn't know if this was internal in the control box of the winch, etc., and again, until you buy the winch and look/read, you don't know if you haven't done one.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm nowhere close and not likely to be over that way with the car.

If, however, you'd moved to Perth in your recent move, I could have probably employed you full time for a month or two of weekends just on my Defender!

hit a truck wreckers for a wrecked dangerous goods carrier their isolation switches also serve as circut breakers in the event of major snafu.

unfortunately they are arotable item so no I cant lay my hands on one for ya

This might give you some ideas:

Measure up the size of the mounting bolts you have at the moment - you should have the capability to go up to M12 HT - and there might be ability to add bolts thru the side of the chassis rails.
