TD5 Fuel Cooler leaks.

I havn't had fuel cooler issues but as Justinc pointed out corrosion problems hurt big time. There was nothing to hint at the real cause of my woes. Ih he doesn't have unexplained coolant losses or coolant comming out of the cap then I wouldn't worry. If you want a full run down on my woes just ask.

My mate's new to Land Rovers, having owned a SWB Patrol for the last 20 years and having kept it in good order. He loves the way the Disco drives, but is having an 'anxiety attack' over 2 recent coolant leaks.

I went to our local dealer to get a new cooler - he said 10 working days to delivery. i RANG BACK TO TELL HIM I had found a repairer that could supply a genuine part and 20 minutes he rang back to tell me that he could not supply until 16/7/07 so I told him to get S---- ed . I found a dealer in Brisbane that would supply in Toowoomba on Monday
Total cost 500.00 so if any of you can change the seal in a cooler I am interested.
I will change the cooler for the genuine part this time but I will be trying to change whatever is leaking and then I will post the results of the repair on the site for any other LEAKER.

Please tell me your using Viton not basic NBR rubber...

Its running way too close to the temp limits for decent life of NBR....

Yep, thats right... Nominal 1.875" id x 1/8" nominal...

I'm not sure what O-Rings he got, but I'll pass it on. He was talking about removing it and by-passing it while he makes sure he rebuilds the cooler properly.

• Can / should he re-use the same clamps?
• What do you guys use for replacement clamps?

From his over the phone description it sounded to me like he could use a h/duty hose clamp, but he says no.

We reuse the same clamps.

Now, what about the fuel line clamps?

He looked at them and tried PIRTEK, BURSONS & REPCO, for the special tool.

Is a special tool actually required to disconnect them, or is there some other trick?

Hi michael,

I assume you mean the fuel lines to the cooler? they are a push on type, You push the line towards the cooler, then pull back the outer 'ring' to disconnect, Then pull the line off the pipe. They have an internal O ring as a seal, and a barb type of ring fitting that clicks /locks when the line is pushed back over the pipe. To check its on, gently try and pull the line back off the pipe after fitting.

Thanks Justin, what a relief, he was told he needed a special tool to remove them, and then he couldn't find anyone who had one.

Given the w'end is half over and freezing, he'll probably repair it next w'end, so I'll keep you updated on his progress - for those who may be keen to repair theirs in future.
