    Unleaded in a 2l Petrol Series 1?

    Hi all,

I read on a UK site that the 2 litre petrol engine in a series 1 will run OK on unleaded. Personally, I wouldn't have thought so. Octane rating would be OK but I would expect valve regression because of the lack of lead.

Can anyone with a series 1 with the original engine still in it let me know. If it will not run on unleaded what are people doing to run their engines. Adding upper cylinder lubricant with each fill or some thing else.

    Thanks

I don't have a Series 1, but do have the 6 cylinder version of the motor (2.6) in a Series III. I use standard unleaded and upper cylinder lubricant and/ or lead replacement (phosphorus-based) in every fill. Maybe that's overkill, but it seems good insurance to me. The valve seats aren't hardened unless replaced.

Dont have a series 1 but I ran unleaded in my 2A until the valves went (4 months and not too many km's). I have since had my head done up for unleaded and the thing goes very well. I did, at one stage, try unleaded with the additive but the motor didn't like that at all - more sluggish and rough than usual.

Only the exhaust valves need hardened inserts fitted to run on unleaded. If the 2L and 2.6L F-head (IOE) engines already had them as std then they can run on unleaded - do they?

The 2l engine has steel exhaust valve seats which should withstand unleaded - remembering too that when that engine was designed all petrol did not necessarily have lead in it, and for a worldwide utility vehicle, this could not have been assumed.

Even if you do get valve seat recession the exhaust valve seats can be replaced, no machining should be required and it can normally be done with the block in the chassis.
