Do you have the wiring diagrams, Simon?
Ron
Hey all,
I've got a little problem.
No dash lights, no tail lights, no parking lights, no air con compressor.
Headlights, brake lights, and air con fan work fine.
Defender 300tdi 130.
I've been fiddling about for a while trying to find the point where it went wrong. I can't find anything obvious.
I've pulled out Kgs of old accessory wiring for stuff that is long gone. I've replaced relays in battery box and rewired the stuff that is easy and looked old, and replaced battery box fuse box.
I'm hoping that someone knows what kind of common point I should be looking at.
Cheers
Simon

This is the first wiring diagram to come to hand.
So, the answer is probably no. This diagram is from the old photocopy manual and is labelled all vehicles all zones post '86.
I'm guessing it doesn't include Australian air con.
I'll find the rave stuff in a minute.

go to the fuse box
check each fuse
while you're there, with the fuse removed check that each fuse has +ve feed. some will only have power with ignition ON.
I'm guessing the items with no power won't have a +ve feed.
remove the fuse box and see whether they share the same feed.
what colour is the wire (are the wires) with no power?
can you identify these same wires in the battery box? or at a relay?
my guess is that you've lost power on the battery side of the fuse box, so there's no need to strip off the dash or wiring going to lights etc.
Well I have had a study of the wiring diagrams - and I think the lights and the air con are seperate issues.
Fuses/supply/headers/earths are seperate for the lights and air con.
As Ron said do you hve the wiring diagrams ?
I'll go through the air con circuit again and get back to you
If you haven't got the diagrams pm me and I can send you them
I had a similar problem when I first got the 'fender and took it to an auto electrician. It cost all of $45 for him to fix it. These blokes know how cars are wired so it doesn't normally take them long to fix it. The problem in my case was that the previuos owner had fitted a lit cigarette lighter and it was shorting to earth.
Steve.
id definately start at the fuses, plug up your battery charger and turn the ign on, on the tops of the blade fuses touch the test lamp not a multimeter to the socket or if you retrofitted them the little diagnostic spots on the the top of the blade fuse itself (if youve got glass fuses just touch either side of the fuses)
Assuming that they all check out which i dont think they will I would suggest that the fault is behind the dash on one of the plugs that allow you to seperate the harness. Being a deefer, Im tipping that water has gotten in and corroded the contacts.

Well I've got the lights working again, thanks folks.
Blown fuse in the main fuse box that missed the visual inspection. Kids took my test light, but I all I've got is an analogue multimeter and that did the trick.
There's still a bad earth in the loom that runs from the battery box up into the air con under the dash. Is there a way to get to it without pulling the air con out. Where does that loom go? What are hte relays and fuses in the battery box for?
I'm hoping that the wiring I cleaned up and replaced caught whatever short that might have started it.
Cheers
Simon
