Question New Disco buyer - advice anyone???

    Hi all,

I know this has probably been covered before, but seing as though I'm more familiar with older Landies, I'll ask again anyway .

I am considering upgrading to a Tdi (not Td5) Disco from my much loved Rangie and wondered what to keep an eye out for? I am looking at low spec models after the '94 upgrade with a manual 'box spending around $10,000. I know as a diesel the service history needs to be spot on and have heard the odd story of head gaskets going on some Tdi's .

The model I have my eye on is a base spec '95 Disco with 145k on the clock and a strict service/maintenance history with books stamped every 10k by Landy specialists. It drives very well with little smoke, no backlash or funny noises and everything inside works perfectly. It presents as new apart from some minor surface rust around the rear skylight and the buyer is asking $10,200 - is that about right? I believe that these vehicles are reliable if well maintained and should run up a reasonable number of kays. Is this true and what should I keep an eye out for .

    Cheers - Will

There have been a few threads lately on what to look for in Disco 1's and TDi. Maybe do a search.
    Here's quick checklist :
    Body
    Alpine windows - no rust
No cracks in body around firewall /engine mounts ( bit hard to see unless you know what to look for - I don't)
No rust in rear cargo area floor
Wet carpets generally in driver/passenger side indicates leaking windscreen or other issues.
    Mechanicals
Timing belt /timing kit upgrade done
Regular services - 5000Km engine oil change ( if mineral base oils are used ) and 10000Km service.

    Few others I can't remember...have a search.

I had my TDI disco '97 for about 130,000 k's and it was very reliable.

Just started to get a bit of a transfer case whine around the time a sold it as well as occasionally drop into neutral on the transfer case, mainly when backing off the throttle as starting to go down hill. The mechanics at ULR suggested this was not common, but not uncommon either.

ive just recently bought my 97 disco se v8,148 000km $10500 ,10200 sound good ,for a tdi
the only problem ive found is the slight rust around the alpine windows
ive had a quote from two pannel beaters to get it taken out,and both quote about $570,rust cut out and the whole roof resprayed.

thats not a lot, just take that into account when you purchase yours, you might be able to talk the price down

    Hi guys,

thanks for the speedy replies . Regarding the servicing, this vehicle had it's oil dropped every 10k. I would prefer every 5k (especially on a diesel) and it is something I keep to on all my cars - petrol or diesel. However, I have heard that Land Rover specifies every 10k oil changes for the Tdi, is that correct .

Also the belt was done @ 90, 000kms (goody)

Will throw up some pics if I buy

By the way, anyone interested in a nice 1977 2 Door Rangie with 110,000 ?

    Cheers - Will

The other thing to check (is not a major cost item but will usually fail in the worst spot) is the pipe between the fuel filter and pump under the bonnet, the pipe can be too short and can cause the pump to crack. wouldnt stop you from buying it just something to look at. I traded mine in with 285000km on the clock and the only problems I had was that and the idler pulley. I do regret selling it at times
