    $10k for a rebuild? Jeez!

    I'd be sticking a new HS2.8 in it for that money....but I don't know if they're a straight drop-in on a TD5 like they are on a 300TDi.

I got a mate who got ripped off $13K for a Nissan 3 litre diesel rebuild, and that's for an old shaped Nissan (sorry I don't know Nissan models).

V8 with auto does sound good, unless you can find a rolled D3 and get a TDV6 with 6 Speed auto .

I could believe $8k to do a full blown rebuild on a td5, assuming that its a tow in drive away rebuild that your after. Basing my charge rates on what the ADF quotes manhours for on NFW-member to pay work and my parts from the www.lanrdovers.com.au catalog

to remove a Td5 from a defender (havent even looked at a disco one yet (shudder) would take me about 6-8 hours doing it all properly and then that and a bit more to get it back in. Including the routine consumables that go with removing and installing an engine that could blow out the first 1.5-2k

no way known Im going to let you put any of the following back on an engine IVe just rebuilt without having them cleaned tested and rebuilt to next door to perfection. Turbo, radiator, intercooler, doing up each one of them is easily 8 hours worth in total so theres another 800 down the tube. chuck in some more consuables, flushers cleaners, disposal of contaminated coolant/flush and theres another grand gone. And I still havent pulled the head off.

so I get the head off, theres a heap of consumables gone, new gaskets to put in, and lets just say that it only needs a quick plane down and your valves and guides are all perfect, $750 done. but oh wait, and injectors out of spec and needs replacing theres $1200 minimum gone over and above the $750 to get the head work done.

Im not even halfway through doing the work yet and already thats pretty close to $5k gone.

new bearings, new fuel pressure regulator, new oil cooler, new fuel cooler, replacement hoses, pistons and rings, timing chain, cam, timing chain tensioner, con rods, crank? reworking the block....

Assuming the guy KNOWS what hes doing, Does what he claims $10 for a tow in drive out engine rebuild on a TD5 assuming about a 40% parts replacement isnt too bad.. Just for fun I speced out the parts only to do a TD5 from go to whoa replacing everything and I cleared $10k.

For an engine out job with minimum parts, id be raising my eyebrows at any opening "soft" quote of more than $5k.

    Yep that sounds about right.
I was quoted 6-10 grand. Up to 16 grand if major damage is found once it was stripped. Cost me $4500 with me doing the strip down, cleaning and reassembly. Specialists did the machining type work. Rest went in parts.

What has happened to it? and Where are you?
