check the connections on the startermotor and all the earths....
turn the engine off and check the voltage at the plugs on the back of the alternator with the ignition on.
If you have 12v or near enough to battery voltage on the plugs/connections at the alternator then your alternator is stuffed.
If you dont get 12v at the alternator its got to be in the harness. The perentines have a relay between the sense wire of the alternator and the battery which occasionally goes west giving the same symptoms as youve got. Havent looked at the diagram for the td5 deefer but imagine it would be similar.


.. It seems that you have to take the engine off to get to the alternator. I have checked fuses 24, 27, 23 in the fuse box under the steering. And yes, the serpentine belt is still there. The engine also still seems to be attached to the alternator as are the wires to the battery & the little multi plug on the back of the alternator.
