    Alternator Light came on??

Just when I thought that I was going to have a lazy afternoon, the alternator light on my discovery 2 TD5 has erupted into life, while it should be snoozing.

It took me a while to find the alternator.. It seems that you have to take the engine off to get to the alternator. I have checked fuses 24, 27, 23 in the fuse box under the steering. And yes, the serpentine belt is still there. The engine also still seems to be attached to the alternator as are the wires to the battery & the little multi plug on the back of the alternator.

The voltage at the battery while the engine is running is 11ish volts.

    I am now at a loss......HELP PLEASE

check the connections on the startermotor and all the earths....

turn the engine off and check the voltage at the plugs on the back of the alternator with the ignition on.

If you have 12v or near enough to battery voltage on the plugs/connections at the alternator then your alternator is stuffed.

If you dont get 12v at the alternator its got to be in the harness. The perentines have a relay between the sense wire of the alternator and the battery which occasionally goes west giving the same symptoms as youve got. Havent looked at the diagram for the td5 deefer but imagine it would be similar.

Yes but did you notice if the smoke escaped.
In this case it will be red yellow and black smoke , not the red white and blue smoke peculiar to LUCAS components.

If the smoke has escaped, your alternator is ,( and I do not want to be too technical here) "stuffed".

It can only be fixed by visiting an auto electrician and emptying your wallet while saying "please screw me" .

If your battery is less than 12 volts while running , and the red light of death is on, the overwhelming odds are that your alternator has died. Of course it may only be the regulator, brush holder that has died in which case it will only cost your first born.

I have considered all of your advice & I thanks you all. I have decided the following:

Death it will be - for my relationship with this vehicle. I cannot see myself visiting the back of beyond in a vehicle that you cannot even change the alternator without incurring some cataclysmic cost which includes flying a LR trained double, double, double jointed monkey with nano hands to remove a plug from the back of the alternator so that I can test for $$"£_)(*&^ voltage.

Toyota here I come. I am sure that there are more trained monkeys for toyotas therefore will be cheaper won't it?
