A strip down, a good clean, and a bit of lubrication may fix it.

I will try the strip and clean, what is a replacement worth or can it be overhauled.

so long as the contactors arent absolutely stuffed a good cleaning out and relube with a good grease thats not too tacky will see you right, dont forget to lube the pivots on the throw out and the sliding mech on the actual starter pinion

if your having to tap the solenoid would it be worth changing the solenoid
pretty sure thats what we just brought for our 200 as it is over running i.e not turning off when the key has been taken out and i'm sure thats the solenoid we are changing oh hang on i might be wrong there anyway see if you can just change the solenoid much cheaper than changing the starter

Right, starter is removed, dropped exhaust and washer bottle took about one hour.
Hardest part was trying to get the starter out past the block and body.

Now, what part do I pull apart to clean.

New solenoid priced at $140 (Roverparts plus)

Another possible cause is voltage drop to solonoid switch, quick test place starter in vice attach 12volt earth to vice, positive to battery terminal on soloniod, make contact to switch wire terminal with jumper wire from positive, if bendix activates and starter spins, possible high resistance in wiring from start relay (if they have one I am not familiar with defenders), maybe a failing relay, though highly unlikely. If the soloniod is a servicable unit there will be two screws/bolts holding the end cap to the body of the soloniod, check with you auto elect to see if contacts are available for that model starter. Check for any play in armeture shaft bush, easily done at bendix end, play will cause the armeture to poll.

everything you can, and clean, and grease all the parts that should be greased. Pinch an emery board off the wife (they use them for their nails)

.........and clean the contacts, also carefully clean the comutator, and if you are careful - re-cut the insulation in between the comutator strips.

Wash the windings out with petrol/or turps - and make sure it's very dry before re-assembly
