Rover Land FTG and RRC 3.5 head gasket

I've tentatively booked my 86 EFI Rangie for a head-gasket job this weekend at Rover Land in ferntree gully, seeing as their over the phone price was significantly less that other specialists in my area. Has anyone had work done by these guys before? I'm just inherently suspicious of anything too cheap...

Also, what "while the head's off" jobs are there to consider (I'll be replacing the thermostat, since that's gone too)? Will pop by and ask some questions beforehand, but not being very mechanically minded I'd love your 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc opinions!

The car is still quite drivable apart from the odd stall-at-idle-when-cold issue, and the annoying loss of coolant.

    Thanks!

I have a D2 and have my servicing and all my repairs done at Roverland. I dont know how Glen compares prices wise but I am always confident he will do a good job.

He and Marco (Glens offsider) run a good shop and nice guys (once you get to know em). Glen did his apprenticeship at Ritters and I think he used to be head mechanic at AMV...so he knows Rovers.

Glen is one of the 'smaller' rover specialists and he will stick by his work. Never had any problems...apart from his grumbling whenever he turns up for work on Monday and the disco has been towed to his shop again cause Iver broken something! lol

Ask him about fitting flares also.....

He does them at a very good price with very little profit...

I'm sure they will anyway, but get them to check the cam shaft, timing chain and lifters. The cams wear alot. I had my heads off at 270k km and the cam was stuffed, it still ran OK, one of the beauties of the rover V8, it will run when very sick.
Doing the cam now will add some extra cost in parts, but is not labour intensive when you are already that far.

Thanks for the replies guys. Puts my mind at rest knowing others have had good dealings with them - incidentally I just found a thread about rover land in the recommended suppliers forum...

Having 2nd thoughts about mentioning you guys - by the sounds of it, Roverland ought to be listed as a dependent on your respective tax returns

Zej, also get them to do the welsh plugs in the heads whilst they are off, much easier.
