    opinions on reliability

    Hi all,
first time poster here. Basically im looking at buying a 96 v8 Discovery, and wanted a few opinions from the people that count..... owners.
Im a mechanic so of course i will be doing all maintenance myself which will reduce any repair costs significantly (i work in a dealership so i can understand peoples pain).
Ive heard the v8s are pretty bullet proof, apart from the odd electrical probs.
what are your experiences? same thing for autos and the rest of the drive line?
Does anyone make conversion kits for ford or holden efi v8 motors?
Ive found that discoverys have a luke warm reputation in the industry, they are a magnificent car to drive, on and off road but constantly hampered by quality issues. is it really that bad?? are you taking your cars back to the mechanic every second week? also does anyone know of a competant gas conversion garage in the south eastern area of melbourne. im in cheltenham.
the car im looking at has 170000 on the clock and is cheap because its a trade in and has never done any serious 4wd'ing.
Id appreciate any help, and thanks for letting me on your forum, even though i dont own a landy...........yet.
    Andrew

I'm not a Disco owner, but I've got a 1988 Range Rover. The motor is going strong, not leaking or using any oil and has done 433,000km. Basically the same motor as a Disco, so I'll vouch for that part.

I've got a 97 diesel, so can't advise on the engine, but the rest of the car is brilliant. 10 years of reasonably hard work and it's holding together well. Still rides very comfortably and all the trim etc still looks good. We've taken it on all sorts of holidays with 3 kids and all the gear and it's a great touring wagon.

I'm biased towards diesels, but that is whole other argument

Don't bother putting a Holden or Ford in, they are about 100Kgs heavier, the Disco V8 is a very long lived motor if serviced properly, they have a "y" shaped block with the sump pan rails well below the crank centreline and have great strength for an Alloy block, the later 4L and 4.6L have 4 bolt mains, crossbolted. The low compression and long stroke makes for great low down torque, unlike most other brand V8's, keep it all Land Rover and you won't be disappointed, Regards Frank.

G'day skidmark and welcome to AULRO...

Before I bought my Disco, I rang Graeme Cooper who said, if looked after, a V8 should go for 600,000 kms - positive...

Here's a quick run down with my 93 3.5 V8i - I have owned it for 4 years. Got it with 220,000 on the clock and is now at 290,000 ks. I only do regular maintenance like plugs and oil/filters etc..... then I fix (with help from here) when a problem arises....

Tends to get thru plugs, as they get sooty after a while...
I've never bothered to work this out seriously.
Firetrap (PCV valve) lines and heads gummed up; cleaned out and fixed.
Fuel pump let go recently - new pump, new fuel filter, new leads, new plugs, was running a bit rough after all this, but has, err, self sorted.
It's getting old and doesn't deliver as much grunt as it once did, but maybe a really good tune and a go over of the injectors would fix that.
Have had to change all cooling hoses.

    End of engine story.

    Other:
    Power steering leaks.
I need to change the bearing in the air con compressor.
The heater matrix went bang a few years ago so I bypassed it.
The left front door has a locking mechanism issue...
New front wheel bearings at 280,000ks.

General: Same brake pads, battery and alternator, tyres and shocks for at least the last four years, all electrical things work fine. Gearboxes seem real good, as do the diffs. (A little play in the driveline). Body tidy, paint on roof/bonnet is fading...no rust around top rear glass, but some spots underneath rear guards.

Drinks fuel, so what.... goes anywhere i want to go...
nice ride, I'd like a last of the Disco 1 updates (1998-9?)

    Good luck with yours,

    GQ

    First of all Welcome
Most of the LR bashing is just a myth. They are no worse or no better than anything else on the market.
All makes have problems that are usually unique to that brand. The V8s are a simple motor to work on with parts being plentiful and cheap if you look around. I would have another v8 in a minute especially at the price they are going for at the moment.
I do not believe there are any serious issues with the V8, there are a few with the diesels but no more than Toyota or Nissan.
