    How are OE rear trailing arms welded ?

    are they a friction/resistance weld and hence welded right through (as it appears to my uneducated eye ?)

    Anyone know for sure, or able to make an educated guess based on the look of the weld bead or from when they've cut them up ?

    fairly sure your right!
    thats what it looked like to me when i cut a few up. both bits heated red and spun in opposite directions to fuse together.

    I don't know exactly what methos they used, but I can say there was buggerall penetration. I was able to pull them apart and keep the tubes intact.

    I agree with friction/resistance weld. The weld flash is a dead give away.

    As for the comment about the penetration, I put the comment down to lack of understanding. They are welded to the full thickness of the tubing used.

    Well, Im certainly no expert on welding, but all I was trying to say is we didn't need to grind all the way through the tube to get them apart, which was rather handy at the time.

    thanks fella's, that's exactly what I was after.
    I've had the hollow bar to sleeve them for near on twelve months, just need to do it but also need to turn or grind the weld flash off the OD (it's a close fit) and was wondering what the weld penetration was like.
    I was going to cheat if the weld penetration was OK and just bond the sleeves rather than weld, (have a few tubes left over in the freezer of some aircraft/race car epoxy adhesive) to cover my ar$e RTA/insurance wise (no sir they're not welded )
