    which new springs 'n shocks

    took my new 11 year old 130 for a service and a good "once-over" the other day and was told it was a decent all-round specimen. But...I need new shocks and springs. Having decided to go for the Bilsteins, I'm not sure whether to stick with the spring-within-a-spring (rear) LR arrangement or go for one of the aftermarket brands. Advice welcomed.

    It may be worth considering Polyairs somewhere in the equation.

    I reckon - replace the shocks first and see how that goes, then look at springs. I'm not sure if Polyairs fit the original 130 setup, but if they do, you can probably just fit those with the new shocks. If you decide to go to a single spring, then the polyairs may help with heavy loads.

    Or you could just go air suspension

    i have kings and efs shocks on a loaded disco 1, known someone with air bag on rear of 110 rides great,back axle works well over uneven ground

    thanks guys, I'm new to the site - haven't been down this road before but one of my springs is definately buggered and the others have seen better days (the previous owner towed a 3.5 ton boat/trailer) and i've always liked the LR double spring setup - but maybe Kings or similar are just as good/better????

    I do a fair bit of towing. Camper would be up to 1400kg fully laden. I have considered Polyairs in the past but if I need new springs anyway, the Polyairs might not be necessary.

    A mate with a 110 tray back, with King Springs & Bilsteins found that with a heavy load the ute sat level, but over undulating desert terrain the back of the ute rose and fell about 1 meter . This caused the Bilsteins to get pretty hot (though they didn't fade). Polyairs cured the sea sickness and helped keep the shocks cool.

    Another mate with a Troopy was impressed when his co-driver, a Toyota-hater, stopped the car and crawled underneath to inspect the better suspension. The thing that tamed the Troopy was Polyairs. On the same trip across the Tanami, the killed a shock absorber, but only noticed it once they got back onto sealed roads and heard it rattle - the Polyairs had dampened the ride.

    Firstly, welcome to the board.

    Before we get to the shocks, what's wrong with the stock springs ?
    Have they sagged, are they bottoming or is it riding/handling badly ?

    Until we can determine some parameters here, advise is of little value, except to say that IMO the OE springs are a pretty high quality spring.

    Secondly, until we determine spring rates, can't really recommend dampers, except to say that Bilsteins will need to be re-valved to suit either the OE or an aftermarket rear spring in a 130. There will be insufficient rebound control, and this applies regardless of damper used.
