when they die they get a hole in them and your oil turns up in your coolant..

when they die in a spectacular fashion The oil gets into your coolant and then if you havent noticed that when the engine is off the cooling system pressure forces it into the sump... when you go for the next start the engine will cook itself, you'll have milky oil, no or very little coolant and a now cactus engine as there was neither a, good oil to protect the engine and b, no coolant to help keep it cool...

Thats not a lot of help the only way to check it properly is to pull it out...

Hi, my g/box oil cooler [ 2000 TD5 Defender 130] is a simple loop of pipe running forward beneath and to the right of the engine sump and then back to the box.Mine came loose at the union at the box and cooked the bearings but didn't have anything to do with the coolant for the engine, so no possibility of engine damage. Maybe substituting this simpler style may be an option.Cheers, 130man.

Nope, won't work very well, not enough surface area for heat rejection.
There's a mile more heat to reject from the engine oil than the transmission oil.

A fluid/fluid heat exchanger is much more effective for a given size than even the best air/fluid heat exchangers like an Earl's, Setrab, etc.

I was assuming he was talking about the inblock oil/coolant heat exchanger of the TD5.

In hind sight yea. Should have just changed it when I did all the head work. It failed in 1000km on the other work. THe day it went everything was fine then we noticed the oil pressure guage drop a little. Pulled over and there was sludge in the coolant. Towed it home and then discovered the oil cooler.

I wonder if a decent auto trans cooler in the return line could be employed to do the job??????.
The fuel cooler is there for one reason only, the plastic fuel tank.Diesel fuel expands greater than petrol,if you didnt keep a full tank of diesel in the heat of summer chances are it isnt needed at all.
