Noise from Transfer Case???
G'day all,
Some of you might remember a previous thread where I asked about a noise from my Gearbox/Transfer Case
well here I have a related question after taking it to a mechanic...
Question: Took my V8i Discovery (1996) to a mechanical mob in SA and they said that a crunching noise from the Transfer Case when in neutral and the Gearbox is in gear is caused from normal where and is not a problem - IS THIS SO?
Does every Discovery with 170,000kms or more on the clock have this noise?
They also said that the whine I have in gear is from that main baring in the clutch and not related to the Transfer Case crunch noise - I'm still not convinced!!
Cheers,
Chosen.

Why are you yelling
TIC
Transfer box in neutral and main box in gear can be noisey. The gears in the TC are relatively large and agricultural TIC. When they are unloaded, and spun up, the free play in the dear train can allow a hell of a lot of chatter (chaff cutter style).
I dont know if this is the crunch you mention. crunch weird, but noisey yes. can be

Thanks Duff, it may well be just typical Disco sound in the TC. I'll take it to a Land Rover specialist next - The whine isn't a typical Land Rover sound!

Okie Doke, Today I adjusted the Bearing Preload in the TC, it has taken up the slack in the Case. The noise is still there, may be just warn gears but I suspect it is the bearings. I'll drive it around until/if it starts getting noisier and then pull the whole thing out and do the blasted bearings then...
Cheers all
