    Supercharger on a 4.6 in a classic

    Hi,

    Hope everyone is well,

I have been driving my '93 Vogue with a custom exhaust and 4.6 + Motec for a while now, and love it's extra torque, power, and the astonishing tuning job done by Ward at Graeme Cooper in NSW that means I can keep up wth a Cayenne S to around 50kph from the lights.

I was thinking of putting in a supercharger.

Ward explained to me that it was possible, but due to space, this will come at the expense of the airconditioning drive and unit. He also indicated that the difference in power etc would not be enough to satisfy his tastes.
Now that I am in VIC and the winter weather is on the "cooler" side, this may not be too much of an issue comfort wise.

Does anyone have experience in supercharging a 4.6 + Motec, and whether it could be a reasonably cost effective bit of fun seasonal thing:

    S/C in winter
    A/C in summer

Your combined minds and opinions, as always, greatly received.

Holy cr$p. 41 views and not one comment. Reckon I should take my super charger idea and flush it - if no one has experience here, then I don't wanna be the first.

My experiences with supercharging and turbocharging as an add-on, date back to older technology, but supercharging is a very complex and very frustrating business, particularly if you are wanting to get more boost than about 6-8psi over atmospheric. Solve one problem and another emerges. You will find it cheaper to fit some cubic inches, say 6 litres of aluminium Chev small block. You will also find such a conversion more reliable, more driveable and less frustrating as in beating head against garage wall.

I spoke to someone at LRA a little while back (not Andrew) and he was not keen on supercharging and told me that they did not do it anymore.

I did speak with Deacon automotive but they were talking about $10k to supercharge. I guess you could speak with Deacon and pick their brains and then do it all yourself.

LRA make the kit to bolt on the Commo SC to the rover V8 i am sure if you speak to andrew and splash some cash he would do it :P

Easy mate, if you are skilled enough to wire and program a motec (m800?) then you are sweet to fit a supercharger. Perhaps swap from MAF sensor to MAP and tune using that as the load index. The brackets can be done by anyone that can weld. If you look on ebay you can get an eaton m90 for cheap , and it may mean a slight bonnet mod but you keep AC. I say go for it!!

I repeat, It will be cheaper and better to fit cubic inches. I have visited add-on superchargers and turbochargers in road and race cars at all levels, owner, modifier, fitter, redesigner, fixer of stuff-ups etc. They are worth the trouble and expense if you want the noise and the grunt from high boost, but not if you want the drama and blow-ups. Buy a bloody good tool kit first. You will need it.

lol or dont stress the engine with huge boost. A big engine is good, but brings other probs. Running the motec means you can increase advance hugely, esp with a high octane fuel. No more than perhaps half an atmosphere, perhaps 7~8psi would give a wicked boost. Set up stab enrichment and you should be able to crack wicked rpm almost instantly.
