my defender = lack of power

    hey all,

my def is suffering from lack of power.

vehicle = 1998 300 tdi tray back. 220,000km, never missed a service. 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust, fuel pump turned up, more efficent intercooler.

stock gearing except maxi drive low range. 235/85r16 mud horns. had a new head installed 5000km ago. 2 inch lifted springs.

trailer i tow every day weighs 1.9 tonne. dual axle

on the high way, 5th gear on level ground gives me a max (foot to floor) of 110km/h. if theres a small head wind that drops back to 105km/h

any slight incline and speed drops, small hills drop me back to 85 - 90.
    very frustrating.

this has not happened over night. it seems to be a lack of torque???
so what should i be looking for?????

    cheers serg

    Check your throttle cable tension.

Failing throttle cable and assuming that fuel/air filters are up to date have your injectors been replaced?
I had similar power loss and replacement injectors @ about $280 ea and dead easy to install were like getting an extra gear.

If your throttl cable is fine and injectors dont need attention - Is your turbo still working ok. As with the Defender I had .. lack of growl = Lack of go.

Valve clearances? These are critical on a Tdi for good performance.
Every 10,000km, .008" (.203mm) inlet and exhaust , hot or cold.
They will especially need adjusting after the fitting of a new head 5000km ago...
    Try that.
