It is a qustion I have asked, yet never answered. The guage senders and surge tanks, etc might be different, but I would think the actual pumps should be the same. Maybe you can buy the cheaper one and swap the pump unit over.
Can anyone tell me what the difference is (apart from price) between the Td5 Discovery and the Td5 Defender fuel pumps. The Disco pump is around $500 and the Defender one is around $800. Physically they appear identical and I am wondering why I shouldn't buy a Disco pump for the Defender and put my saved $300 to some other use instead of 'donating' it to the parts supplier.

Hi Bigjon.
Ring Stuart at Rovacraft on (08) 9377 0080 and he'll tell you why and give you prices.
I believe they've got a branch at Mascot but I haven't got their number.
Alan.
Thanks for reply BigJon but it is not possible to swap just the pump. A friend pulled one apart to investigate just what caused the failure & in doing so, destroyed the housing - all the fuel lines in the housing age harden and become inflexible.
I bought a pump for a D2 (either one of the D2's on our Madigan trip, my sons D2 or my 'town' car) & that's when I discovered that the D2 & Defender pumps appear identical.
BTW, I believe from Robert & Martine, that you give excellent service to travellers visiting Alice - although I'll be turning east at Old Andado in a few weeks, four of our party of twelve vehicles will be taking the 'tourist' route and passing through Alice. If you could PM me with some contact or address/business name etc. I'll pass it on to them so they can say G'day.
Roger
I was told when mine went that yes the Disco pump costs less but no they are not interchangeable. Don't know why.
Hey Mate,
ok i have the 2 on my desk...
Defender WFX000260 Black housing
Discovery WFX000280 White Housing
Not sure but it looks like its all to do with the sender unit, the arm on the Defender in Cranked...and also has a differant part No on the sender both read Siemens VDO (Def-10 Disco-12)
Maybe give Anthony a call at our Mascot office 0297008920
Cheers
Stuart
Thanks for the response Stuart. I just spoke to Anthony and he is unaware of difference.
If it is only the sender unit, they simply clip on/off so replacing new Disco sender unit with old Defender unit should not be a problem.
Of more concern is the actual operation of the two pumps. Maybe I should just try a Disco one in the Defender and see how it goes - I might do that in a friend's Defender as he has already cut an access hole in the floor of his Defender so pump access/replacement is only a 20min job.
May have time to experiment in about a month after our Madigan trip.
Roger
Cool no worries...
Was just checking i did sell a Disco pump to a defender owner a while back and a couple of days later he came back in a purchased the Defender one...not sure what happened??? i just tried to call him to refresh my memory but he didn't answer...So mmm
I think i would go straight to the Defender one for piece of mind...
