Hi all,
What is the primary purpose of axle straps on a series landy?
Is it to stop the axle hanging down?
Is it to stop the shock absorber trying to overextend and acting as an axle strap?
If you have a shockie that will not reach full extension when the spring has, do you need an axle strap?
Neither of my previous series landies had their axle straps fitted and I never has an issue - however the series 3 never got used offroad when I had it but the series 1 which went some great places had the old airadjustable shockies on it that had substantially greater extension and were never over extended.
My current series 1 will need new suspension and I would prefer to have max articulation and feel axle straps may restrict it unneccesarily if I have longer travel shocks on the car.
Thanks
Garry

Hi Garry
To protect your shocks I would use them.
Make your own just a tad shorter than the new shocks full extension.
Old seatbelts are very good material to use.

The principal purpose of the axle straps is to protect the shock absorbers. There are differing opinions on how necessary they are - I suspect it depends on what sort of driving you do and what shock absorbers you have.
If you never drive off road, or have shock absorbers stronger than the original ones, then they are unnecessary. With standard stroke shock absorbers they will have an insignificant effect on articulation - if you take them off, the shock absorber will limit travel just beyond where the strap does. However, if you fit longer travel shock absorbers, then there is no point in having the straps (or at least you will need longer ones) - however, to fit longer shock absorbers and make use of the longer travel, you will also have to modify the mounts, otherwise the shock absorber will be acting as a bump stop, which is probably not very good for them either (or raise the springs plus bump stop).
