Notes on using a Ford fan on a 300TDi

During one of my visits to Pick and Payless wreckers, I was looking at a RRC and saw it had a Ford radiator fan fitted. Since there were plenty of XE/XF Fords around, I had a look at what happens if you need to fit one.

This is the comparison between the standard XE fan and the trimmed version from the Rangie. It's roughly 10mm off the ends. Otherwise it bolts straight on.

The following show what happens when you fit a early metal fan from an XE ford with the ford viscous hub.

It fits, sort of. As you saw, it's very close to the pulleys with the ford hub. The LR hub is a bit thicker, so re-use it if you ever have to replace your fan.

But...although it clears the sides and top and pulleys OK, the metal and untrimmed plastic Ford fans scape along the bottom of the shroud. Look at the bottom of the pic below:

If you were carefull and in the middle of nowhere, you could get away with a bit of bending of the blades ( Providing you use your LR hub).

For new Tdi owners, the fan nut is 32mm reverse thread. Auto tool stores ( ie forget Repco and Supercheap) sell Ford vicscous fan hub spanners which make short work of taking the fan off.

Be careful using Ford metal bladed fans.

I've had a couple of different cars shear off a blade and belt the bonnet.

The worst part was one car did it 15kms Bourke side of Byrock.......

I had a fan pack up on me once and fitted a ford fan without mods.It screwed straight on.I ran it for months without drama's.That was on my defender and cost $20 from a wrecker. When the second rover one goes I will use it from then on. Pat
