Thread: Is a 3" S Steel exhaust on a Rangie V8 a good idea?

if it was a waste of time for a stroked 4.7L V8, what was it for my friend who has a 2L 4 cylinder!!! I would say it is adequate, since I am running 3.5 standard engine on two 2" systems. I'm sure someone who has done it will be able to tell you if they found an increase in performance... Just my two cents

I reckon it would only give extra performance at the very top end say over 5000RPM, and it would be noisier and dronier than say a 2.25-2.5 at all lower revs.

You could do 3 but boy would it be noisy (I cant believe I just said that) and as stated top end performance mainly i wouldn’t go more then a 2.5 and perhaps straight through mufflers that will give you noise and better back pressure

Thanks Guys, I take it that it's a waste, the 4.7lt dosen't like to rev much over 3000 revs. I think it is because the motor is stroked. It has heaps fo low end torque

I need to make a decision by 10am tomorrow, its 2nd hand and will cost about $500. I had thought it was good value, but not if i dont gain anything except an exhaust that wont rust! and a deep noise

Remember the ports are geared for 3.5 litres. To get top end in a big motor you need to open them out , strangely enough particularly the exhaust ports.

3" will be fine for a 4.7L
But i would still only run a 2.5"

Def looking into the ports as these motors love to rev and if you think its struggling over 3000rpm something isnt right.

Its should be ball tearing all the way to atleast 5000rpm

I bought the Rangie about two years ago. The previous owner had the engine overhauled and stroked by Ritter’s in Melbourne, at the same time the heads where overhauled and set up for unleaded fuel.

Is it true that a stroked motor likes to rev high? Because mine defiantly doesn’t!

I dont mind as the low end torque is just the best.

My old '86 RR with a 4.6 (and heads with bigger Chev valves) had a 3" stainless steel exhaust - it was all done by John Davis Motorworks for the previous owner.

It had a nice note but I wouldn't say it droned or was uncomfortable as far as noise goes - and I'm one who like s a quiet car. I did a number of long trips in it and drove it daily to work (60km each way) for 5 years.
