Question Wheel Alignment, TDI 300 Cab Chassis

    G'day All

Need a bit of advice/opinion about wheel alignment.

Just before I left Tassie in May I had a wheel alignment done on the Princess after fitting a new set of cooper St-C.

After a casual 3680 odd k cruise to Townsville I've got very noticeable scrubbing on the inside of the tires. I've had the front end re aligned again but was told that it was close to correct. I suspect that its still not right but I'd be interested in your thoughts, tricks, tips etc etc.

Spot on to what weeds said, take a tape measure to the outside of the tread ridge and check for your self.

I had the same prob with coopers, third time tonight ive typed this, fronts were out but one of the tyre joints I went to tried to tell me that the rear alighnment was out on a live axel rear end.

I took it to my trusted Tyrepower and had it checked and rear was 00 and front was 12mm toe in.

Fixed the toe in but still had scrubbing.

I wouldnt straght up blame the tyres but I would check the alignment your self and maybe put about 1 to 2mm toe out on it bit by bit.

Yep check it for yourself but jack it up and spin the tyre and scribe the face of the tread with a nail or similar, this will give a more accurate measurement. If you have been touring for long stretches without much accelerating then toe out may be a problem.
you don't want toe out if it's scrubbing the insides I think mcrover means toe in.
    I go for zero.

Sorry yeah, brain fade, toe in 1mm at a time.

Just another thought, what are your wheel bearing adjustment like, if it is slightly loose, you can get weird tyre wear but on a landy it would be prety evident if they had really excesive play.

Iwas tild with mine its the camber thats wrong, eg a little wear in the swivel hubs and or wheelbearings arn't right.

    Cheers sumo.

    tyre wear

    Guys

Thanks for your replys, Ill jack it up and mark the tyres and see how I get on. I've got a bloody great shed in which to do it.

I suspect its still toed out to far as all the adjustments are almost got no thread left at all.

Incidently, what pressures would you be running?

I started at about 34f and 36r and maintained that all the way up. I feel it should be about 40 all round.

    Thoughts please?

Oh and one other thing, it hasn't cracked 50,000 yet so bearings and joints should still be reasonable shouldn't they?

In case you don't know what you are inspecting or adjusting .. mebbe someone (Ladas!!) would be kind enough to post up a pdf.. I can't take snapshots from my RAVE.

Some possibilities are the draglink may be bent and getting bendyer..

Otherwise there is a chance that on both occasions the W/A techs haven't bothered with a runout compensation.. pretty good chance of that.. and there may be a woop in one of your wheels.

Or the specs on their machine say 2mm out +/-<whatever> so they think it's right but it's far from it... (a story for another day)

Low pressures can highlight the problem.. and there's pages of tyre discussion on here, but I run about 30-34ish emptyish and up to say 38-40 reasonably laden..
Depending how much gear you've got and I gather you're trekking somewhere, then 40-45 may be a good starting point for you.

*disclaimer - mine would be considered quite minimal pressures but I maintain, monitor and rotate them yada yada.. Don't run low pressures like this and only get around to checking on them once in every 3mths or when 1 looks a bit flat...
