    Series Diesel no go

My series 2.25D is giving me a headache!

After stuttering on the freeway one night, I cleaned the filters out and found diesel bug in the bottom of my CAV filter.
I changed it, cleaned it and put it back together. I also changed the inline ryco filter that sits on top of the fuel tank (under driver's seat). I added diesel fuel conditioner too.

I reprimed it and hey presto! off it went. I drove it around for a few days, then my girlfriend was driving it home from work the other day and it just stopped. She called NRMA and they couldn't re-start it. So it was towed home.

Today I've taken all the filters out, put them back in and retightened every nut, screw and union on the entire fuel system (it's a SWB, so there isn't much!). I've reprimed it and it started this morning on the 2nd go. I idled it for 15 minutes and drove it in the driveway.

This afternoon I took it for a test run up the street, and it's run fine for a bit, then lurched and stopped. It's in the drive now and won't restart.

Seems like it's getting enough fuel to run for a bit when I prime it, then something stops it. Either it's sucking air (from I don't know where) or something's blocked it up I don't know...

Land Vehicle Spares are full up now for 2 weeks, so that's where it's going when they have time. But I'd like my LR back on the road sooner than that...

    what's the problem gurus?

    Alastair

I had the same problem with my fender,it would run fine then stop.Like you I changed everything a few times but at some point I knocked the wire to the cut-off switch on the injector pump.I pulled it off cleaned the connection and made sure it clicked when it went back on and it hasn't stopped since. AFAIK, there is no cut-off switch on the Series Diesels - all had an "Engine Stop" cable... which may be something to look at if the spring returning it is not broken and is moving freely (... I know I know... it was one of THOSE moments). Other than that the pickup pipe may be clogged up in the tank or fuel pump.

Nice idea PAT - unfortunately no wires here...

Alastair - what do you mean by "inline ryco filter" - you don't have a petrol fuel filter on a diesel do you?

Have you checked the ring of screws on the fuel (lift) pump are tight? Is the diaphragm OK? Could there be any crap in the tank blocking the pickup?

Are you bleeding both chambers of the pump? Where is the air when it cuts out?

G'day All, I had a similar problem about 20 years ago with my 2.25 diesel, the problem was in the lift pump, a faulty valve was allowing fuel to run back to the tank, it happened whilst driving and when parked up for any length of time, 2 new valves in the pump end of problem, that was my fix 20 years ago hope that's of some help cheers Dennis

I think Dennis is on the money - sounds like classic lift pump symptoms. I'd also be concerned about a ryco plastic in-line filter on a diesel (if thats what you're describing) - give that the flick before it gives you trouble.

    Cheers.

Im with Dinty and IR on this one, if the diaphram screws are loose, it can suck air and not leak, and I have had the check valves fail on mechanical pumps before which can make the pump pump nothing or as Dinty said at rest allows it to flow back to the tank providing a void in the system.

Have a go at the pump and see what happens then.

By the way IR, I run a standard Z14 on all my machines at work and have never had any problems, why would that be a problem? They make my expensive fuel filters last a hell of a lot longer and a $3.00 a shot, I dont mind changing them every service.

the ring of screws around the lift pump (the bit I pump up and down to prime it) are all very tight...

now it won't start at all...

If I had diesel bug in the bottom of my CAV filter, (which I cleaned out), does that mean I have globs of diesel bug sitting in my tank (even though I put biocide in)??

maybe that's the culprit. Although...the inline ryco filter only has clean diesel in it. I can see it swishing around inside...

This is a 300tdi thing, so don't know if it applies. My lift pump has a gauze filter in the top. All the times that I've had identical problems to you the final culprit is the gauze being completely shugged up with stuff.

Well, that or lift pump stuffed.

Could also be the pick up in the tank getting globs of stuff caught in it.

    Cheers
    Simon
