I'm sure this is a very rare problem, but I did see one thread about 2 years ago on the UK Landrovernet forum.
The person concerned had put a 2nd hand td5 in his series 3, and it had eventually developed a nasty knock. When it was dismantled one of the big end bearings was wrecked because the bearing shell had moved, and impeded the oil way in the crankshaft. The upper part of the piston had been damaged because the failure of the bearing had allowed the piston to hit the head!
The thread mainly described his replacing the td5 with another one.
