    Front end overhaul

It's time for my long suffering Defender to get some money thrown at her as the king pin bearings are worn out and I'm getting alot off shake through the steering and the bushes are rooted and she's wondering a bit on the road.Is there any problems I should know about beforehand as I would like to do it once and overhaul the whole front end and Cv's as well.Is there anything that I should do. Obviously replace both swivel pin bearings and bushes as well as the pins themselves. Also remember to get the thrust washers with the bushes, if they arent already there. When doing this it is very important to get the bearing pre-load right, so buy some shims from your parts supplier when you get everything else, as you will need them to set it up right.

Also replace the swivel housing seals and check the condition of the crome balls. Look for any harsh scratches and/or pitting on the chrome ball. Any scratches etc will tear the lip off the seal prematurely.

Replace radius arm bushes and panhard rod bushes. Also replace the bolts for the panhard rod. Make sure they are a nice tight fit.

You could convert the front wheel bearings to oil fed rather than grease while you're at it. You'll need to remove the axle oil seal from the inside edge of the stub axle (usually just removing the lip of the seal is good enough) and you'll also need to replace the hub oil seal with the correct one (cant remember part number at the moment). May as well do the wheel bearings while you're at it.

Check the condition of your brake discs as well. Anything under 12mm is undersize and should be replaced.

I'm sure there are other things to note, I cant think of them all at the minute......good luck with it. It's pretty straight forward and can be done easily in a weekend.
    Cheers

    Pretty much what mick said

check the pitman arm and all the tie rod ends

You can also mod the bracket (cut slots in to top so that you can remove the brake caliper with cracking the brake lines)that is held in place by the swivel pin bolts

With the radius arm bushes do I need castor bushes with 2'' lift springs? The CV's are grease filled so I'll re-assemble them the same way. I was just going the replace the inner seal to the diff center and run greas thru the rest. Pat
