    Handbrake Sticking

(Not refering to a clingy Mrs either)

My Disco handbrake is S**tting me right off.
I've adjusted it every which-way but it keeps sticking on.
Is there a cam that can round off, get sticky etc.
Or is it time for new brake shoes?

That will be the acuator ( or how ever it is spelt)
It is a metal tube with a rod and two ball bearings, pull on the hand brake which pulls the metal rod and the ball bearsings move two more rods that push the brake shoes out to work the hand brake (basic explanation) . We get though these alot in the Uk as mud and crap gets in there and jams them up. But you want to clean it and not replace as they are bloody expensive to buy new

As suggested the problem will be either :-

    1. Actuator rusted up (not that common in Australia but the same effect is possible with a damaged boot when it fills up with dust. (dissassemble, clean, lubricate, replace boot if necessary, reassemble)

    2. Leaking rear transfer case seal and the whole ot is gummed up with oil. (replace seal, replace shoes, clean up, reassemble)

Removing the drum (you don't even have to remove the prop shaft) will tell you which it is.

My hand brake on the County stuck on recently. Pulled the drum off, worn shoes.......how do hand brake shoes wear out????? Actuator and adjuster were both gunked up with mud, dirt and goodness knows what. Tin of kero and a stiff brush cleaned that up, bit or grease and reassemble. Perfect.....replaced the rubber boot too, that's what let the muck in.
