Versatile, but awkward to pack and take a lot of effort.
Hello all I am in a bit of a bind, do I buy a hand winch or an electric???
I have a 76 mod 2 dr RRover, I do most of my 4x4ing with my bro in his Jackaroo. I am leaning towards the hand winch as it is so versatile?
Any feedback will be gratefully appreciated.

i have both and like both. the only reason i even have a hand winch is so i can winch backwards if i have to.
If he's only got a Jackeroo then you wont be doing much really chellenging stuff so the hand winch would probably be sufficient.
Not having much of a go at the Jack but with IFS, not much room for tyres and not much suspention travel means that generally you will be connected to him via snatchy more than bothering to winch.
If you were constantly going it alone or doing steep slippery stuff on a regular basis then you would use an elecy winch enough to warrent the extra weight.
Just make sure you buy a good quality Tirfor type winch which is over rated for the weight of your Rangie and you mount it in side the vehical securely as in a accident the winch it self and the separate roll of cable would be like a cannon ball going through you.
Im not a big fan of Tirfor type winches, do a search to why but if your not going to use one regularly then I dont see the use in the extra fuel weight and cost of an electric winch.
Do a search as there are plenty of threads on this.
It's not so much affording the electric winch as the extra petrol used carrying it around all the time. At least with a hand winch you can take it out of the car.

Don't underestimate a Jackaroo. They're not as bad as you may think and they do have a heap of suspension articulation, most from a phenominal rear end. A mate also bolted 33's on with a 2" lift, something that most landys wont do.
As for the winch. You will only use a hand winch once. Then when you realise how much hard work it is you'll either drive like a pansy or buy an electric winch.
