They don't make them anymore, Michelin XCL. This site has quite a wide range of tyres that you could use to, perhaps, identify an alternative (read Chinese).
I'm am thinking of replacing my current tyres when they wear out with michelin sahara (or X's). i looked them up on the worldwide michelin site but they didn't have the sizes. Also when i called michelin (redirected to local dealer) all i got was confusion (can you get a blank look on the telephone?). So does anyone here know if you can get them in 7.50-16 or 235/85R16 in australia? Or who should i talk to?
Seeing them on the Series 1 in the pictures of the expo got me thinking.
Cheers,
WR.

I got the same run around when I was trying to buy a set of Michelin XZLs. In the end I rang Michelin's head office (Sydney?) and found out that you CAN still get XZLs, after 3 different tyre dealers told me they were out of production. Once I had a contact name in Michelin the dealers did the rest.
BTW, those XCLs are supposed to wear very badly on bitumen, but they look way cool!
The original Michelin Sand tyre is a Michelin XS & a google search reveals that they are still available in some parts of the world though less likely to be known about in Australia.
They would be likely to be good tyres for trips into the sandy parts of the red centre & just the medicine for climbing "Big Red" but by repute are less suited to all round use than a good AT type tyre & not at home on tarmac. I say by repute as I've never seen them let alone used them but have done extensive research ( dreaming) into desert travel, mainly with view to a trip across the Sahara (or red centre) & that is the overwhelming impression I get. But hey, far be its from me to shoot down someones dreams, for without dreams we might as well be dead.

We used them on some vehicles in the Simpson in the sixties, and I can agree they are very good in sand. Not any good at all in mud and very mediocre on bitumen. I am not surprised to hear they are still available, nor that they are hard to come by - not much demand for pure sand tyres!

Thanks everyone. In light of your comments i will get back on the michelin site and have another look. Then if i am still convinced i will try and get onto the head office. The vehicles i have seen them used on have been more in the catergory where on road handling isn't such and issue. i.e compared to bar treads.
cheers
