Hi all,
My cousin is putting an adjustable panhard rod into hes VL commodore, and I was keen to see the design. From the photos below, you can see its a pretty easy mod to do. My question is, would this design be strong enough for 4wd use? The aim is to modify the stock panhard rather than purchase an aftermarket one.
No lift on it yet, but will be soon. I know that anything around 2" is OK to have a stock, but anything above may require something like this. Plus, I will know the front aint tracking true with a biggish lift, which will bug me!![]()
My lift is 3 1/2" from stock and the diff is barely offset.
Lift it first, get a GOOD aligner to check it....
Then if its outside tolerance, look at getting one..
Remember, the thread is the weakest point on that thing! And the stress offroad will far exceed that placed on one by a crap-o-dore
Very true, ill will check first. I just wanted an opinion on what the thoughts are regarding the method of adjustment. It has the two sides with nuts welded on, and a central threaded shaft. I thought this was an interesting design as I would have thought it would be designed similar to how the drag link adjustment is, one side is male, the other side female.
Why make it adjustable? The threaded section is a weak point and once set you will never need to change it.
Why not do your lift and work out what you need to do to your panhard rod to get the alignment right. Then make a new fixed length one. Much cheaper and easier to do!

The photo is not really clear enough but it does look like the threaded rod is left & right hand threaded ( a turnbuckle) so any adjustment will be just a matter of slackening off the lock nuts and turning the central hex. section in the required direction. I do NOT like the welded nuts on the two rod sections. I would have thought these sections would be pieces of thick wall 4140 or 4340 tapped left and right to depth as required with an intermediate lead tap so as not to leave a sharp cut-off of the threaded section. Probably made adjustable to fit Commodores with various suspension heights.
