Yep this happens on a TD5. You have to nip it up a bit every so often once the leak appears. I think it happens even more so when using full synthetic oil.
Guys
Has anyone else experienced problems with leaks from the seal of the spin-on oil filter on a TD5? I change the oil and filters regularly and a couple of times I've experienced delayed leaks from the seal of the full flow spin-on filter. By delayed, I mean that the leak occurs several thousand k after the filter is installed. The filter is on tight but I can stop the leak by using the filter wrench and really tightening it up, so much so that it's difficult to get off next time. Any thoughts on a possible cause?
In a lifetime of motoring I can only think of one previous similar problem and that was on an old VW kombi. That was due to a stuck oil overpressure relief valve. Is this the most likely cause of my problem and how can I fix it?

Ive found that with big red if i spin it up then add 1/4-1/2 of a turn its ok till the engine warms up (take it for a good run, work that turbo) then reach in with the welders gloves and a bit off inner tube and it will go another 1/3 or so and then doesnt leak from there

Well Ive never had mine leak on any vehicle Ive owned.
I clean the metal surface thoroughly, add a smear of fresh oil around the rubber seal and hand tighten, then a 1/4 tweak (never over tighten, it compresses the oilseal and will leak and be a bugger to get off next time) and thats it, never a leakand I use synthetics.

I had mine leaking badly and asked at Canberra Motor Works when I had the Disco serviced. His reply was that the fix is to run a die over the thread on the oil filter fitting. Seems to work, mine hasn't leaked since and that was 30,000 Ks ago.

The male thread on the filter fitting, he mentioned he had to make a jig up to do it in the vehicle.
