I'll probably get howled down for this,,
but across the desert BUB91 was quite happy to be loaded right up at 1000 revs, even lower when you had to,,
I think the 8 cylinders make a big difference down low.

Ive been driving many different turbo diesels for over 20 years. The FM12 Volvo I drive at work now, uses a rev range between 1200rpm to 1800rpm
Ive found driving my D2 td5 to a max rev's of 2500rpm (instead of 3000rpm) I can easily get 10.5-11 litres/100ks. Even on a resent trip from ACT to Thredbo and back. This was driving at and just above the speed limit, passing when I could and using cruise control.
The Volvo gets 48l/100ks pulling 32 tonne-ish.
just my 2 cents worth,,,
:tease:
I'll have to search for that pic of the ship engine I posted ----:eek2::eek2::eek2:
found it----

OK. Mine revs up to 3000 on take off. If take of up a steep hill from near slow then up to 4000. Normal cruising once it's moving comes down to between 2-2500rpm. Mine is not standard though.
