    Discovery Vibration

The Discovery (1995 4.6L Auto) has started to vibrate.

At speeds over about 30 k's it starts - haven't taken it too fast to see if it disappears, but it does lessen when the accelerator is taken off.

I have looked at the rotoflex coupling to the back diff, but it doesn't look too bad. I bought one anyway and will put it on on the weekend.

I have ckecked the unis and they all appear sound.

The front output shaft from the transferr case has about 5 - 10 degrees play in it - does this sound normal or could it be a worn shaft?

I can't see where any wheel weights have fallen off, but I haven't had them rebalanced yet.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
    Andrew

I'd suggest do a search through the old threads first.

Have you checked the bolts that hold your uni yokes to the shaft? Mine where loose gave me a vibration.

If it were a D2 i'd say the DC joint front prop shaft.

Maybe try the front shock mounts or the handbrake drum.

Take out one of the drive shafts and go for a drive either one first, you'll rule them out if it's still there after doing that.

i agree with the hand brake drum post

definitely check the hand brake drum first. it gets a build up of the various fluids that constantly drip from the front of our beloved rovers & creates a shuddering effect due to the build up acting like a weight off centre.
pull off the rear drive shaft & undo the bolts & the casing comes off & you can clean it with either degreaser or brake cleaner.
    good luck

Stating the obvious, have you checked the inside of your rims for mud or dirt build up. Not a mechanical fault but you would be surprised how many times this has caught people out.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

First thing I am going to do is degrease it tomorrow night and make sure I get the inside of all the wheels properly. Then Saturday I will remove the rear shaft and take it for a drive, then do the handbrake and rotoflex coupling.

If that doesn't do any good I will try taking off the front shaft and take it for a spin.

If I am still stuffed I will post here and allready have it booked in for Tuesday at a good mechanics.

Check - front shockers and bushes, wheel bearings and wheel balance.

If it is worse under acceleration then it has to be driveline.

When mine did it it was the rear driveshaft donut. However mine was completely rooted (the bolts had marks from touching each other). Even when this bad mine was not too bad up to about 80km/h from memory.

It felt like a really bad rear wheel balance but only under acceleration.
